iced a walleye and a few jumbos the other day, brought them home and was extremely disappointed to see they had worms. some of the perch we caught had black spots on them so they went back down the hole but the walleye and a few of the perch seemed clean until i cut em open. is there any other way to tell if a fish is wormy other than the small black dots? Id rather not kill a fish or put a fish towards my limit if the meat is no good. sorry if this sounds newby, this was my first encounter with wormy fish lol

thanks guys

Black spots imply larval fluke a parasite which is harmless to humans. The worms are harmless ,if the fish is cooked well.Personally I don't worry about black spot, but when I see live worms I loose my desire to cook the fish. Their isn't a way,to my knowledge, to tell if a fish has worms. I find fish in cold deep water ,usually, don't have worms and shallow warm water do.

What staffman said - if you want to get grossed out check out the lifecycle of this bug  But ya, totally harmless

i wouldnt eat fish with worms, it won't do you harm if you cook it long enough but if you have the guts to eat a fish after seeing worms crawl in them, then go right ahead lol, that being said, theres no real way to tell that a fish is wormy, I've caught lakers out of simcoe with worms too, thats why i know fish lakers up north, the black dots are just a sort of parasite, not necessarily worms.

Every salmon I have caught contain worms. These are wild AK salmon. Good luck finding a worm free fish. They are usually in the gut and easily discarded. Gross yes, but not harmful.

These Had yelloww.grub red? I Know.where you were lol. Sometimes You can see a few around the gills and where the tail starts if its got them bad. Fine to eat if cooked. I usually get them out of the fillet with a poke and twist of the fillet knife and pop them out like.a.zit! Ewww

I've only seen a fish with worms 2 times, never seen a salmon with worms, i did see a bow from the g-bay tribs with worms and a laker with worms, if i see worms in it, i take them out and fry it, but i don't eat it, i let everyone else in the house who hasn't seen the worms yet eat it, lol.

same for me, i caught 2 bows last spring, i kept the first one but when i got the second one out of the net for a photo i was shocked to see worms on the gills, i mean the gills are packed with them, so i just took it by the mouth, a quick photo and sent it back, worried that the one i kept was the same i checked him in the cooler, not a single worm on the gills, took him home inspected the guts and not a single worm was found, luckily it had nothing on him but i was not aware until before that this worms could be found on fish, did a little reading and it indicates its safe to eat the fish after cooking, afterall its not harmfull for human consumption, but now as a general rule if im keeping the fish the gillplates is my judgement point is the fish is edible,

If they bother you, leave your fillets soaking in water in the refrigerator overnight. The worms will be easy to spot and remove prior to cooking - just cut them out. Some fish have unusually higher amounts than others, and evidence is visual around the outside underside of the gills, (as was previously mentioned) especially with perch. The black spots (parasites) are harmless and easily remove when skinning the fillets.
