Just putting it out there, we are going on vacation next week. With a rental car we are looking to buy a GPS, used prefered to save some money on. MUST have US maps.

Windshield mount and car charger is another must.

Thanks for looking!

If you go for a new one get lifetime map updates so that your gps maps are always up to date. Most car gps are north american (can/us)maps some also have Europe but you pay more $$$ for them.
If you are thinking about used or even re-furbished the maps can be out of date (whole sub divisions not to mention streets may be missing) paying for updates can be expensive

Something most people may not know is TomTom doesnt have an office in Canada but they have a post office box in Mississauga and if you have to send your tomtom back even under warranty it will cost you an un refundable $25 To ship it to them, you cant drop it off and if you send it COD its as good as lost. I had a lemon TomTom new last year and I had to send it back twice, so just a wee bit of info for you so that you can make up your own mind and not get lost along the way.

but don't believe everything the GPS tells you. They screw up all too often. Mine failed to find a nearby Tims twice---unforgivable! The first step is learning how to use it but then second step is learning when to and when not to. For daytime hiway driving I still use a map and road signs, but for finding a street in a subdivision esp at nite they are quite useful. (BTW, rental car co.s usually have them for rent---at a price, of course)

JMatt- Thanks for the added effort! This whole weekend was such a mess, havent had a chance to get to the store. Little one has been sick!

Remy- Going ot have to pass, although a great deal. Just not going to be handy when driving.

Ronnie- The life time map thing is cool, the added cost sometimes isnt worth it. I bought a Navigon brand one a couple years ago. Didnt have any updates, however got me around Canada and the USA. I live in Florida with it for a year, never got me lost. Will keep this in mind though. Thats insane about TomTom, a company of that size I would expect more from them. Thank you for the heads up. Valueable information.

Knuguy- the first Timmies the gps misses its out the window LOL! I kid I kid! For us, I am looking for a cheaper option yes to save money but our van has GPS built in 95% of road trips are done in this. Locally our iPhones haven't led us wrong yet. The car rental company wants like $14/day for the gps we are there for 10 days thats $140. Id rather buy one for that price.
