Xtra large hybrid

I went out for a few hours this afternoon and a caught this guy. It is the biggest goldfish / common carp hybrid I have caught so far at 9 lbs.

Just out of curiosity how do you tell the difference between a common carp and the hybrid? My monitor is small, so I can't really see why this fish is a hybrid and not just a common carp. Nice fish though hammer.

I was ready for that very question. Some of the differences between a common carp and a goldfish / common hybrid are;

The mouth is smaller and less tubular and the barbels are smaller or completely lacking.




There is a distinct lateral line.


They are more laterally compressed ( thinner ) than a common carp and the tail is shorter as well. One more thing you may also see small ( dime size ) splotches of orange on the body. This one had them but they never seem to show up on photos taken.

Yes. But there have been gold fish in our local waters for at least half a century. I have no idea whether they ( the hybrids ) are sterile or if they breed . They seem to hang together as you can get numbers of them in a single session fishing. I have heard people call them by different names. Crucian carp, German carp or even Footballs.
