So I decided to head up to Island Lake up in Orangeville for the first time after hearing about the place from my neighbour. He was up there a couple weeks ago but only came away with several dozen perch. A quick research into the lake and turns out there are LMs, Crappie and Pike to go along with the usual Panfish combo. So off we go.
I was also looking forward to getting some practice on my new baitcast reel I picked up. After getting some advice from another friend of mine who owns about a dozen baitcaster reels of his own, and a sweet deal online, I couldn't resist and gave in. Picked up the new Shimano Curado and matched it up with a 6'6 Lightning Rod (something about these rods thats I just can't get away from). Spooled it up with 30lb Power Pro and decided to tie on a Strike King Spinnerbait to start off the day.
So got the boat out and started trolling our way to the first set of islands. After my third cast on the new baitcaster, I suddenly feel a *Thud* on my line as Im burning this spinnerbait across what seemed to be an endless forest of Hydra. Im thinking its Hydra, as my fishing days usually start off very slow. But this hydra was moving! So I immediately set the hook and realized, this ain't no weeds on the run, its a fish! Already?! 15 seconds of reeling and I begin to see the silhouette of the bass..Wait what? This ain't no bass, its thinner! Its Longer! And it has a snout! My gosh its a Pike! My first ever pike! That was quite unexpected, as I did not think I would be catching pike so soon (this being my first year of fishing). But here he is...
Not impressive as some of the pike Ive seen you guys pull out, but nonetheless a milestone fish!
So after a few laughs, smiles and farewell salute to this little guy, we continued our search for these Island Lake Hogs. Heading into shallower and heavier Hydra, we continued casting out with spinners. Not even ten minutes from that pike, I get a nice pull on my line, and set the hook! Fight on! This guy put on one heck of a fight. 15 seconds later I get my first glimpse at this UFC bass...But wait a sec, this guy looks familiar, and it wasn't a bass.
Another Pike! Bigger than our first friend and turned out to be the biggest of the day (weighed in at 1.65lb). And our fun does not stop there...I realized ive wrote a heck of a lot already, and I myself am quite exhausted from a long and fun day on the lake, so Ill let the pictures take you the rest of the day...
Pike 3! Smallest guy of the day!
Pike 4! Skinny little guy.
Pike 5!
Pike 6!
Pike 7!
Pike 8! 2nd Biggest guy today (weighed in at 1.30lbs)
8 Pike, all fairly small, but I guess when it rains it pours! Ill definately be back next week and hopefully have a go at some bass and possibly some larger pike, as we did not have enough time to explore the entire lake. Gotta find them Bass!
Thanks for viewing!

Dammit, I don't tend to have good luck at Island Lake. Looks like you do. I've caught a fair number of pike ice fishing there though.

Great report. That's awsome, not only your first Pike but then getting seven more, sweet. You now have a PB-personal best, that I'm sure you will easily surpass.

Congrats on your first pike, Island lake is fun I miss it as its only 25mins away from me but no gas motors allowed and even tho I can still put around with the electric I'm too lazy to put the boat back on the trailer without using the gas motor:)
I bet your gonna go back soon as it only gets better in Sept/Oct. I think I caught my biggest island lake pike last Oct was 29"s..
