I finally made it out to one of the local rivers on Saturday to try my hand at Steeleheading. It was something that I wanted to try for a very long time but just haven't got around to.

I have been to several rivers in the area and have watched closely and stolen things with my eyes, along with asking questions of some of the river angles. Like with all things, especially fishing, some guys have been very helpful but the majority of them have been very rude, evasive and quit cold when it came to answering questions.

That all changed this past weekend when I was fortunate enough to get out with Mike, one of the great board members from this site. We agreed to head out and he showed me the basics to float fishing along with some of the knowledge he has gained throughout his river experiences.

It was a blast. When we got there conditions were not ideal as the cold weather from the night before caused some ice to form around the edges of the river and there was also quite a severe ice/slush flow coming downstream. Conditions were not ideal but I was used to it and it reminded me off ice-out Pike fishing. Something you just deal with and try to avoid as you are casting.

I of course looked like a total NOOB showing up with my 7' spinning rod where everyone else had a centerpin, but I was not going to let that deter me. The weather started out cold with a light wind but it got much warmer as the day progressed and it was quit beautiful to be at peace with mother nature and take in some of her beauty.

To make a long story short, I caught 3 fish in total. The first was quite small, maybe 8 or 9 inches. The next two were bigger, a few pounds each. I also got to try a centrepin and caught a fish on it. Was very impressed with the free drag system they offer.ck

All in all, a great day with a great guy. More fisherman should give back. Again can't thank Mike enough for his tutelage.

While I may have got a grasp of the basics of float fishing, I have many more years of learning and studying to go as I try to master the rivers and conditions they present and as I continue to take up Steelheading.

Dirk

Wow, 3 fish on the first outing! Thats great.

The fish look great as well.

Kudos to board members for sharing their knowledge, very admirable indeed.

I can't wait to get out for my first time, this thread made me even more eager

good stuff, congrats. you have some prime spots in your backyard, hope to see more reports from the rivers.

MIKE, well done an i think your super human.

DIGGYJ, we have the 7' rod in common. i first started my trout fishing with a 7' shakespeare wit a spinning reel. Yeah the looks turn to respect when people see you catch fish. Great job an keep them coming

Nice fish man , congrats. There are many a day you don't hook into anything especially on first times out .
Don't forget also , that boat of yours that makes you tick , you can get into some prime steelhead action on the big lakes .
I fished many times in lake Ontario in a 15 foot aluminum flat lining and or downrigging and caught some impressive steelhead .
Not to mention all the others like browns , coho and chinook.

:D

awesome Dirk...great job on the catches. All of my catches so far has been on a 7' spinning rod as well. I just got a centrepin and hopefully I'll be up to scratch by the 4th Saturday in April.

kudos to Mike; you helped out, and you did a pretty good job cuz he caught a few...

As Dirk mentioned, and from my experiences as well, the majority of anglers tend to be rude...a few are willing to help and share in this amazing sport...

I'll say it again Dirk, "More fishermen should give back".

hey, those aren't that small! that's some solid chrome you have there.

So great to hear about one fisherman helping another. You're right there're too many cold and snappy guys out here. =P
