Hoping someone can give me a few tips ill be in the market for a new rod and reel. I'm going to be doing a lot of fishing at the island and was hoping to get some tips or advice on a good rod and reel to go out with. Also anything else I should get like a good line and stuff.

Thanks and happy fishing

What are you fishing for?

IFor spinning gear, generally speaking, I'd recommend a light/medium setup. A 2500 series reel and a nice light/medium rod that is 7 foot+ for longer casts.

For line I'd try spooling 10lb mono for backing, then throwing on enough 20lb braid to nearly fill the spool, and finishing off with 14lb fluoro leader (10-15 feet). If you're going for pike you can switch it up to heavier fluoro (50-60lb). The braid casts longer and the dense fluoro at the front will help give your casts that extra forward weight to send the flying.

Only use the braid if your rod and reel are braid ready, otherwise it will chew up your guides etc... if you don't want to spend the extra bit on the higher quality rod you can just use 6-12 lb mono and be covered for most things...just put a leader on for pike!

A 10+ foot rod will cover most applications from perching, pike, carp, salmon, etc. Get something stronger and rated for 8 - 20 lb line and you will be set, as for what make and model... how much are you willing to spend?

lol yah if you're going for anything other than pike, bass or panners you should probably just disregard my advice because I have no idea.

Sorry shud have mentioned that above. Cheers and good luck .

I'm mainly going for pike bass and pan. But if I can get a more all round rod that I can give Salmon and trout a go it would be great. I'm thinking of spending no more then 150 bucks

Thanks for the advice so far

Hoping to spend 150 on both but I'm not going to argue on spending a bit more for something that will last and be a good investment

For an all around shore fishing warm water species rod I would personally suggest a 7’ medium or medium-heavy rod paired with a 2500 series spinning reel. There are a lot of combos out there in the 150 range that are great. At that price you will likely have to sacrifice something in the rod or the reel, at 200 bucks you wouldn’t have to sacrifice either. I’m not really sure what’s in the market now but a few years ago I would have recommended a Shimano Compre rod paired with a Shimano Sahara reel. I know the Sahara is still around and it’s worth 80-90 bucks, not sure about the Compre.

Nado has it right if thats all your looking to fish for than nothing really beats 7-71/2 rod, but if your looking to expand i would go longer. Best of both worlds would be to get two relativity cheap rods, one in the 7' med.light-medium power, fast action range and then another longer one in 9'+ medium-med.heavy power with a moderate action for bait fishing/float fishing. Get one 2500 series reel that comes with a couple of spools, have one loaded with 20lb braid and the other with 8-10lb mono. Your good for a variety of techniques and species. Easily doable for $150-200, lots of good cheap gear out there now.

ya the two spools is a huge plus. I also run one spool with 20lb braid and one with 8-10lb mono. I also have an extra reel that I use 4-6lb mono on for panfish but thats mainly a product of me overspending during the week waiting for the weekend fishing trip to arrive.

well got my stuff today now i just need the water to come down to test out my new gear

You and me both last time my line hit the water was in November. I'm itching to get out there didn't matter if I catch anything. Some nice looking gear though

x2, don't be afraid of longer rods too, they make casting a lot easier from shore.

before december of this year i used a 7 and a half footer for fishing from shore, (pike, bass, salmon) I retired that rod and don't use it all anymore, because I find my 8'6 salmon/steelhead rod is better for every type of shore fishing

i use a fenwick eagle GT 9'6 medium action as my spin rod. this length and strength are good for many applications and I love the action and feel of the rod. they sell for under 100 bucks - i think the best thing for the money. if you want to do salmon, you'll need something a bit stronger like dozer is saying.
when you get to the store wave around a few different models to see if you like the action and grip of the rod. the tackle shops in the hamilton/grimsby area have a pretty good selection and the staff can probably help you match a good reel with the rod you pick. most people on the posts i've seen support the shimano reels.
