I have the Abu Garcia "Home Site" Bookmarked so I went and had a Look See at the Reel You are thinking about. Retails at $49.95US I Think?

They have the details for ALL of their rods and reels on there. (Go back to "Home" to find others)

I believe they also have a "Reel Finder". Plug in Your Criteria and they will recommend the Reel for the Job.

They also have "Schematics" (Blow Ups & Parts List) for ALL of their Reels.

I have one section (File) on my Computer in "My Documents" for "Fishing All". One of the MANY Sub-Sections is "Reels All".

Another Section is"Reel Schematics ALL"

I downloaded the Schematic for the C400 Series of Reels while I was their.

That ONE Schematic applies to ALL of the following C400 Series ... C401i/C402i/C403i/C404i/C406i.

There are also a PILE of User Reviews on there on the C400 Page. That might be of use to you. Some, NOT So Good.

This Link should take you directly to that Page ..... Abu Garcia 400 Series ALL

If Not, this "Cut & Paste" should: http://www.abugarcia...l/cardinal-400i

I did a "Screen Capture" and the Reel on that page is shown below.

To answer your Question. IMHO that Reel is Probably to Light for Serious Salmon Fishing.

Mr. NADO:

No! They aren't serious. It's a Big Lie. The same with all the other Reel Compoanies that incorparate an "Anti-Reverse" Bearing in ALL of their Newer Reels.

ANTI REVERSE means just that. When you set the hook there is NO Handle backing up to take up the Gear Slack,. or excess line that has to be "Picked Up" before the Hook is solidly set. ERGO .... INSTANT HOOK SET! Or "Stops fish in their tracks."

What type of Reel/Reels do you use?
"Anti-Reverse" is now incorporated into ALL Types of Reels.

There is also now an "Anti-Backlash" feature that has been introduced, mainly into.. "Bait Casting Reels". I wouldn't buy one without it! No More BIRDS NESTS!!!

Are you familiar with that New Concept?

The following is a more Detailed Explanation of "Anti-Reverse" Or "stops fish in their tracks"
===================================================================================
"When looking for a reel, the first thing you should always look for is the instant anti-reverse feature. That means when you stop reeling, the reel handle should not be able to move backwards at all. Some reels do not have the instant anti reverse feature & there is plenty of “play” in the reel handle. This is bad news & is usually found in “cheaper” fishing reels.

If you do not have instant anti reverse on your reel, then each time you set the hook, the handle will slam back until it stops, “shocking” the gears in your reel. Eventually, your reel will start to deteriorate and then finally, it will break on you. Let’s hope it’s not the only reel you have in the boat, or you will be very upset. Further, the time lapse between setting the hook & having the handle swing back until it stops, could also find you missing fish.

The best reels have the instant anti-reverse feature, with no “play” in the handle. When you stop reeling, it stops instantly – with no back movement at all. Usually, reel manufacturers achieve this by using a “one way roller bearing” in the reel. When you set the hook, it’s instant & there’s no shock to your reel either. You will catch more fish and your reel will last longer & perform better.

If you don’t consider anything else when buying a reel, at least consider this."

=====================================================================================

If you are at all Technically Inclinded, I Located the "Schematics" for this reel (and other models shown on there) and have Indicated theron, in Yellow the "Anti Reverse Aspects."

I Trust this will answer your Query regarding "Anti Reverse" and "stops fish in their tracks".

OR. You might try .......http://lmgtfy.com/?q...i+Reverse+Reels

I know many guys will swear to using the REVERSE feature on spinning reels.

In over 40+ years, I NEVER HAVE!

Quite frankly, can't even stand the Feature being there.
Causes the line to back reel and tangle.

(Which only ever happens when I knock the buttom by accident)

To each their own, but I wish the reverse button did not even exist.

For my FEEL and USAGE of the Set up, it's a possible down side vs. any benefit.

:D put me down as being Anti "Anti reverse" !!!!! What's the point again?

I knew a guy back in the day that never used his drag but "back reeled" using the anti reverse instead. "I have more control" he'd say..... come again?

WTF?? Does that work? I wanna try!

Well! I guess I got told!!

The Anti reverse I'm talking about is on NEW Reels. It's different than Reversing or Back Winding the reel. That's asking for trouble! I've never done that.

It's Primary purpose is for an Immediate Lock Up and HOOK SET and other reasons as stated above.

It was also a Direct Answer to "Nado's" question.

As far as the NON Anti Reverse Fans go ...... If you don't like it or want it....don't buy it. If it's got a "Switch or Button" don't use it! Easy!!

I have about 8 Spining reels. None of them have Anti reverse. I handle that a different way. I very rarely use them anymore anyway.

I favour "Bait Casting Reels" since the advent of "Anti Backlash" and before. "Anti backlash is a GIFT. No more Birdsnests!!

IMHO and for the way "I" fish they are a Better Reel than Spinning Reels for a number of reasons. BUT! That's just me. You Guys have a lot more experience than me.

When was the last time you saw ANYONE on the Pro Circuit using a Spinning Reel.

However ..... TO EACH HIS OWN!  That's what makes the World "Go Round".

Tight Lines! YA'LL!!
