Ajax area in this time of the year... any tips???

Hi all,

I am new to Ontario and currently living in Ajax.... I am wondering what are the best options around me...

Let me start with few questions/clarifications:

1) How to get a license? I have checked https://www.ontario.ca/page/fishing and it seems that i have to get an Outdoor Card + a license (sport or conservation), is that correct?

2) how to recognise catches? I have checked https://www.ontario.ca/page/fishing-limits-size-restrictions-and-catch-and-release and this is clear... my problem would be: how do I recognise the different fishes??? sorry for the stupid question, but I am not so expert.... so if i catch something, how do I recognise it? is there a booklet? (this time of the year, in Ajax - Zone 17 - the regulation says: Walleye & Sauger, Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Muskellunge, Yellow Perch, Crappie, Sunfish, Lake Whitefis or Channel Catfish)



3) Where are the best sports and what is the easiest catch? (and yummie )

4) What is the best fishing rod setting for the easy catch? (floating, metal spoon...)

5) What is the best tip you could give to a newbie???

I live in Ajax....you can check out every harbor all the way to Port Hope...any tributary in Lake O will hold every freshwater specie there is. You also have Lake Scugog and the Kawarthas.

Lake Ontario and yummie :razz: . Lot's of opportunities in and around Ajax, you just need to read a bit and get educated . Seasons , limits, sanctuaries , species. All kinds of things you need to consider before you head out. Keep asking and people will help you. Good luck.

What do you want to catch?
How far do you want to travel?
What's your definition of easy?

lets start with Northern pike as a target (considering that salmon are off season now), and for the travel, 40 km radius around Ajax.

definition of easy: even a newbie can catch something ;p

Pike fishing is best in early spring around Lake Ontario harbours

Salmon don't have a closed season, the area you're allowed to fish them shrinks, any river or stream from hw2 to the lake is open to fish until the end of the year, from Jan 1 until 4th sat in April, any area from CN/go tracks to the lake is open to fish.


To me, easy fishing is putting a worm on hook and catching all kinds and of panfish and bass. Any type of fishing outside of that, you're bound to get skunked

I agree with FrequentFlyer, You can also use minnows to improve chances of catching different species. But, as stated above check the regulations of what your fishing for and where.

Any harbor/marine can have big pike, most likely in spring (thaw out) and fall, just need to commit to it and put in the time - That's why they call it fishing and not catching.

Look up some of Pump Know's on Youtube as a reference, he does well fishing the Toronto shorelines for pike and is an active member of these forums!
