You may find that feeding the cat goldfish (letting it catch it's own food) will cost less than regular cat food and keep him or her occupied for hours.

LoL I thought of that, I'm thinking of getting an aquarium with a cover so the cat can't get at them. I'm sure where ever I put it that will be the cats favourite spot, I can see it now just staring at them for hours on end.

50?
wowwwwww!!!

I kept a little of everything when I was younger until I got bored. Had red eared sliders for pets, bettas, goldfish, salamander, frogs and now I have a dog.

One of the biggest challenges was keeping the tank clean from algae. What do you do to help keep it clean?

There are many types of algae.
Are you talking about substrate bound algae or suspended algae (green water).
Green water can be a pain in the _ss to remove. There are several different techniques.
- you can get a ultraviolet sterilizer and kill off all the algae particles in the water
- you can use a diatom filter and it's special media to remove the algae in the water
- you can use certain chemicals (can be obtained at fish stores) to clump algae particles so that your filter can remove them
- you can move your tank away from the current location which might be receiving too much natural sunlight
- you can not turn your light on as much which will cut down some of the algal progression.
For substrate bound algae (such as on glass, rocks, plants, etc..)
- you can use certain species of fish that eat algae as a food source (i.e. algae eaters, plecostomus, etc.)
- you can use certain chemicals that will get rid of it, or stop the progression
- you can manually remove the stuff off the glass and decor.

What types did you own? Regular veiltails? Halfmoons? Deltatails? Shorttails?
Did you breed them?

I think I will be starting my first saltwater tank soon.
I've got the tank (90 gallons) ready, filter is ready, recently got T-5 high output lighting, i have a hookup for some free live sand... all i need is marine salt mix and live rock and i'm ready to go!

I'm thinking of going with tangs and angels. expensive, but gosh they are gorgeous compared to freshwater fsh. 8)

Sounds like a good plan maybe I'll go salt water once I decide to get an aquarium. I was told the salt water stays clear & cleaner then fresh is this true?

every time I've gone scuba diving in the oceans, I have been amazed at the colour of the fish. Some have colours so vivid that they look fake. So I can understand the lure in going to a salt water tank. I have heard that it is a lot more expensive and you have to carefully monitor the water.

This is true. If you set up everything right, the tank takes care of itself and all you have to do is add freshwater to the tank everytime it evaporates.
