This is one of my more recent buggers. I too just started to tie some flies, and so far I'm loving it! How does this look and what could I do better?
Not bad, looks like the head may be a little messy but can't really tell from the pic. I would however strongly recommend that people do NOT rip the marabou, no matter what anyone says it is noticeable.

Perhaps the most classic error of novice tiers is to crowd the the eye. I used to do this often myself. "Look at this chenille and hackle, it is going so well I just want a couple more wraps!!". Don't do it. Imagine an empty space behind the eye equal to the size of the eye and don't put anything there until the final material tie-off and formation of the head. Otherwise quite good for an early effort.
Chris and I disagree on ripping the marabou tail if too long. After a couple of fish or some frantic casting they will both look ragged anyway. I have started using a small clump of dyed rabbit fur as it is tougher.

I'm just talking about what it should look like, I agree it won't make much difference when fishing it. If you saw how many flies I tie vs how many I fish you'd get it lol

I had no idea I was going to get such an overwhelming response. Thanks to all.

I just wish I read all of this before I tied up 35 more.

*GIGGLES*

Well. I am stocked up with a bunch of different colors. I saw on a video the tail clipping fingernail trick, will rock that even on spot on the water if its super clear etc.

They're looking better, but the hackle is too long and again doesn't have enough taper. Tails also look a little sparse but are looking better in terms of length. Can't really tell how you're doing with heads because of the cone heads you used.

I definitely did not do them reverse like CC said, because I hadnt read the feedback prior lol. I used the heads, so I could just chuck all the messy ties and starts in there.. works for now.

cool little picture I did in front of my supply bag, how is the bugger looking?

Head is crowded, tail is long and hackle is too long (though no too much longer than it should be). I'd also suggest folding your hackle so it lays back.
