Noticed that my reel bail does not spring back and when opened it, saw that the bail spring is cracked. Does anyone know where I can find one. I can order it from the manufacturer (Daiwa) but it will cost almost half the price of a new reel to have that plus days of waiting. It is basically a torsion spring, not a sophisticated thing. just don's know where they carry it.

Thanks

I cant personally help, but know exactly where your coming from.
When it happened to me, the reel was kinda old and not that expensive anyway, so I threw it out.

In your case what i recommend it this:

Some of the SMALL PRIVATE OWNED shops have great Technician/owners.
They may be able to replace or fix for you, and not charge much (Spare parts etc.- or similiar model spring)

Wish I could help, but following the route of calling some of these should help.
I hope some of the Board Guys - may be of assistance as well.

There are some real friggin "Artists" out there.

Good Luck!

Try Bass Pro Shop @ Va ughan Mills. I know they repair everything but not sure if they have the parts on hand. Give them a call and speak to Geno in fishing. He's the most knowledgable guy in my opinion working there. See what he can do for you or to steer you in the right direction. (905) 761-4000

Good Luck

Hey Getin

I just bought a Diawa Samurai 7i 2500 reel off a guy because the cover, bail trip and spring came off and got lost. The bail won't close automatically without those parts so he sold it for $10. I figured Diawa is a good reel and I don't have their brand so I bought it.

I sure hope this is not a reacurring problem with Diawa reels, the reel I bought was totally dry (no lube at all) and all the screws were loose. Because of the loose screws, that's how the parts came off while fishing and got lost. I went to Gagnon Sports to check on the part, they don't have it and told me Diawa is in Missisauga, $13 shipping plus the part $? and the repair would cost more than the price of the reel. Call them for the phone # to Diawa Canada.

I made bail trip with my dremel and it is working, it will auto close the bail without a spring 80% of the time. I even tried taking an old spring and uncoiling it and reshaping it to make it re-set the bail trip, but the spring was not strong enough. It's still a work in progress.

Can you post some picks of what the old part and your reel looks like? I assume you have the part #, but here is a great site for reel schematics, free to download.

Here is my reel, the black piece is the part I cut from a sheet of ABS plastic. I don't plan on ever getting the orginal parts to fix it b/c I'm in Scarb and going to Miss or order is not worth the reel. I'am not impressed with Diawa low end reels. None of my other reels (14 of them all bought new) are lube dry like this one. It's a nice reel with top ratings but it will take me time to come up with a solution and to rebalance the reel to eliminate the wobble from the missing cover.

I hope I got the right link, it's my first time using photobucket. :D

I'll try to figure out how to fix it cheap cheap......... :)

Oh Blair

Is'nt it a cardinal sin or breaking of the code of ethics to throw out a reel even if it is broken? You SINNER!!!!!!!!! REPENT!!!!!! Haha j/k. I keep mine to collect dust or just as parts.

*SMILES*

SHE had done me well.
I gave my Old Friend a Kiss, said goodbye and then procceeded to throw HER in the garbage can.

Quick ... "No regrets endings" are the best.

Parting with stuff is hard, but if it's worn out, get rid of it. There is nothing worse than having a lot of junk around that makes a mess.

The only thing I'd get rid of when it's old and worn out are WOMEN.........lol. Then yup I agree with ya.......... ;)

Hey Taz

I found this online a couple days ago, a ceiling rod rack anyone can make for less than $20. I used 1 piece of 1x2" strapping $1 @, 1 1/2" PVC conduit clamps (rod butt) $4 for 5, 1" PVC conduit clamps (rod blank) $3 for 5, 3/4" screw I had them, 4 of 2" screws to screw the strapping onto the joists. I cut the 1" PVC clamps so that it only takes 1 screw to hold it and I can slide the rod blank in. I used a dremel and cut off about 30 or 40 degrees off.

I have 7 rods on that one and 3 more rods so have to make another small one for 2 ultralites and one bush/ice rod. It keeps everything out of the way and more importantly tangle free.

Hoard away, just keep it organized and it won't look like you're a hoarder.......lol.

Thats pretty cool . Keep my stuff away from her and the little one. Lets see how she reacts when I tell her I'm building this above our bed so I can keep an eye on all my rods. Lol ;)

Taz be very very careful with that idea, she may think you want to sleep with your rods and not her..........lol

Here's the pic, I kept getting Internal Server Error as attachment.

I love it. And so simple to put together. Thinking I could even build one side ways in my garage(alias my office/mancave) as the wife calls it. Betting it would score me some browning points too. Thanks Grubman ;)

Thanks for the help. I too hope it is not a reoccurring problem as I recently bought another Daiwa (Exceler), that is even more expensive than the broken one. They look like the one in image (with only more loops).

I lost the broken one but have the part #. Seeing such “torsion springs” in many applications, I should be able to find one in Canadian tire or like. Will update you on that.
Thanks for everybody’s input.

Took me less then an hour. You're welcome.

Ok getting back to the original topic.....lol

Getin go to Rona. Lowe's or HD the hardware isle with the plastic bins. I would get one of the tension coil springs and with very heavy side cutters, cut the spring to the approximate size you think you'll need and then straighten the ends by bending the coil spring ends gently in the opposite direction it's coiled. Use needle nose to make the ends as straight as possible. It may take a couple of attempts to get the right size and length but if you get a long tension spring or 2 of them it won't cost too much maybe $3.

I used to work with a machine shop that made specific springs for me and to anneal the springs they just used a regular cooking oven. Make your first test piece and if it works make more and pop them in the oven at 450 for 40 min to take the stress out of bending them.

Good luck.

Thanks Buddy,
I have numerous furnaces and ovens at reach to do the heat treatment. Wil take your advise:)

I totally for to mention, that if you have an old vcr you're not using anymore or it's dead, strip it. Lots of parts worth keeping, small screws, SPRINGS, bearings, electronic parts too. Sometimes worth picking up someone elses junk vcr for parts.

I'm almost there. I bit the bullet and drilled a new hole to mount my own spring to force the bail trip back to a neutral position where the bail can freely spin forwards or back. It's working 100%, the bail closes perfectly. Now all I have to come up with is a cover and balance. Also I applied grease to the areas that should have been lubed at the factory in the first place. Diawa's sloppy QC, some one should get fired for that.

Have you made any progress with yours yet?

One other thing, tighten all your screws or put some blue threadlocker on them. Diawa does not factory tighten them for you. I think this is the one and only Diawa reel I'll ever buy.

My reels mounted on rods inventory is as follows:

3 Abu Garcia
2 Shimano
1 Mitchell
1 Browning
1 Rapala
1 Bass Pro
1 Silstar

Non mounted/broken reels are Zebco/Quantum, will never touch them again either.
