Baitcaster Combo Recomendations

I have an old really cheap Shimano setup that I used for farms ponds but 2 years ago I got a fishing kayak so now I can get out on LPB for smallies and pike. For a rod I need a 2 piece and I would like one 6'6 or longer. I have a small car to transport stuff hence the 2 piece. I'm open to suggestions for a reel but on other forums there is a fondness for the Shimano Caenan. The only rods I have really checked out are the Veritas (MH) and I like them. I will be using the combo for trolling and casting crankbaits and for top waters in quarries. Oh and my budget is around $200 give or take. Let me know your thoughts and recommendations. TC

I have the Caenan, it's not bad but it has plastic materials inside and is pretty noisy. Still hasn't blown up though. I recently got a lews, so much smoother and I cast many feet further. Plus it has brass bearings, not plastic. So if you mean your budget is 200$ for just the reel, step up and get a lews or higher end shimano or abu garcia. If you mean $200 for a combo, the caenan will do but won't last a large amount of years. For a rod, I have a shimano clarus on my caenan, it's a nice rod and was $99 I think. It's soft enough for crankbaits but still stiff enough to fish frogs on lily pads. On my lews I have a G. loomis GL2 and it is SWEET. But that and the lews were... Well way may than $200

I heard good things about the Citica, similar to the Caenan but with an aluminum frame. Maybe check out the Tatula as well.

I have the two Shimano Convergence (6'6") and one Clarus (6'10") 2-piece rods, they have worked well for me so far. I don't have much room for 1-piece rods as well. The old Clarus is/was on sale for $70 at Sail if you can find stock.

At Sail we have the Crucial/Citica combo for I believe $200 right now, great combo.

They are a one piece rod chris.... Crucials only come in one piece.. Our store setup is a caenan and a convergences 6'8 medium heavy jig and worm. I think you are very well off going with this combo, I have had one caenan for 4 years and havent blown it yet, actually bought 2 more a couple years back and havent had an issue. The convergence feels nice, although I havent fished it I have spent the last 2 monthes casting around with it. 68$ for the rod, 99$ for the reel and then 23$ for power proslick 30$!

nah, i have a shimano crucial 5.5ft worm and jig spinning rod thats a 2 piece, great rod, love it for drifting over weed beds in deep water

Yup you're right, was thinking of the spinning. The Caenan isn't a bad combo, I play with our store's demo rod all the time LOL.

The veritas is a very good rod indeed and surprisingly also the sellus by shimano. I cant speak for reels bc i use a bass pro shops reel which is actually pretty good (bionic plus) but the quantum smokes are amazing

I buyed Shimano combination... Curado 201G6 and Compre 6.10 2 pieces rod $250 cash at Peter's tackle St.Catherines ....extremely satisfied !!!
