I was thinking of purchasing an older bamboo rod, perhaps more for nostalgic purposes than anything else, but I want one that will perform adequately as well. I really know nothing about them; some are being sold for $50.00, and some for $1500.00, but they look basically the same to me. What should I look for in a decent older bamboo rod?

The range of price in cane rods is vast. Vintage rods are difficult to value as in many things old, they are worth what someone is willing to pay. If a guy already owns a line from one builder and wants to expand it, he may be more inclined to pay more than the guy just looking for one. They also range greatly in action from ridiculously slow to very fast. The best way to get a feel for them is to get out and cast some and I realize that that can be difficult. The Cane Rod Gathering in Fergus will not be for another year but that would be your best op in this area I believe. I have a couple in the shop that you could try out and get a feel for them and I know a guy who has several for sale. I could arrange a meeting if you would like.

I'm far from an expert on them but I know a lot of it depends on the builder of the rod, some names are much better known and they get more money. The cheaper ones are usually mass produced and in general aren't nearly the same quality.

I have an older Hardy rod that was passed down to me, and I have checked the serial # and know its value. However it will not be fished, and not because of its value but because it would ruin the line.
The guides are small because silk lines are thinner, and are also corroded. The varish is wrinkled. However if I had it refinished it would be worth less than it is in original (unfishable) condition.
I also have a 1959 mass produced cheap Japanese one that cost $15. However a friend who makes rods refinished one the same (since there would be no loss in value) and it casts quite well. Mine is on the cottage wall as a decoration.
Older ones by known crafters will be expensive as Chris says.
Any new/newish ones will be rather expensive because of the labout involved, not particularly because of the components.
A Montague won't be too bad and won't be worth less if you make it a project to refinish.
E-Bay bamboo rods.
