1-3 inches above the hook should be good. If you're having trouble setting the hook it may be because of a small fish nibbling on it.

bobberstop -->beed -->bobberstop -->1.5inches-->hook

Worked well for me. I use bobberstop because I find that pegging sometimes damages your leader.

try the peg-its or troutbeads pegs. usually right beside the beads.
ive been on the hunt for the best silicone basting(pastry) brush pegs. after 4 or 5 different kinds i found awesome ones at the new dollar type store in my town. i cant remember the brand or whatever but they are red or yellow, have clear handles and are labelled a "pastry" brush. get about 70 pegs for $1.25. some are hard to get thru, but if you moisten the hole in the bead and the peg it helps, and pull your lead thru in the same direction can be the kicker( this is with .009" leader) they anchor it tight and can be used twice. they looked at me funny when i asked if they could get 10 or 15 red ones in.......

(also- peg-its work great for pegging worm weights, and pegging corky-style indicators!!!!)

I have been just simply doing this between the hook and the float that way you can easily adjust the bead if it's not quite right but there are other steps you can do to make it a " trout bead knot"

if u want peg-its u can go to dollar store or wallmart and buy basting brushes. most i seen are in red color but they work and u will save $

Its just 10 cents a peg, ya its a rip but were not going to break the bank here.
