When it comes to bluegill fishing either u love it, hate it with a vengence or love it and then realuze you need bigger game. There are questions with this angling sport that need to be anwsered.

Why would anyone purposly try to catch this annoying little fish? How do you properly fish for
them? Where do you find a lot of them?

The majority fisherman will ask why anyone would spend their precious time fishing for this sunfish. Reason number one: people like to start with something simple when they start fishing. Its like my cousin once said when he started fishing "dude, if you just started fishing you cant go out there and catch a 2 foot pike, work your way up the food chain man".
Reason 2: people may be lazy on some days. When you want to remember the feeling of catching a fish but dont feel like bringing the boat out there is always them waiting. It can have arefreshing feeling of why you are fishing.

Reason 3: People love the fish and are always working to beat there records. Imagine how would entertain yourself if you constantly caught your favourite fish well its like that. I have also heard from many people that they are tasty too. While some just like the fish for how it acts.

How to fish for them.

Please do not mistake bluegills for other sunfish. Bluegills are a give away because they are blue in colour and have green stripes. With hook size, you have to keep in mind that these fish swallow bait, so best to use hooks size 5-7. A most common bait for.them is worms. I personally despise little plastic baits for t hem they go up to it an realize its fake every time. The best time to catch them in morning and evening never in the afternoon they get extrmely lazy. A personal favourite bait for these guys are crickets or grasshopers because its natural for them they t ake it instantly
and you always catch the big ones because they are ones big who can swallow it. The thing to do after you catch them is to try to beat the size record and start guessiating the size when you are reeling them in. They sure try theyre best to put up a fight for theyre size. The sturctures that you will find bluegill around is rocks and shoreline sturucture and shade under trees. I think that bluegill prefer a lake enviroment. The personal aces that I would suggest are stocked ponds like mount pleasent ponds, lakes and resiorvoirs and anyplace you hear people mad at them is.an excellent spot currently.Remember when I said that you should guessimaite the fishes length when you are reeling them in the moment that you start getting it perfect everytime is a.sign that you need to move on to bigger game. Perhaps one day I will sum up catfishing like this. Please practice catch and release and respect these fish after all without them there would be less preadators. Despite what people may have against these fish they have theyre respectable place for anglers and fish.

Bluegils are great to eat as long as you catch some bigger ones. I love fishing for them especially if I've been skunked a couple of times in a row. Brings your confidences up and you get some great practice for your hook set timming.

I love to fish for them when I bring a friend along with not much experience. Story........ Last time I fished for them a friend and I (inexperienced friend) caught about 40 between us 30 for me 10 for him about 12 keepers . He was mighty happy about landing 10 his first time out. We took them home and fried them up great day for both of us.

I would love a nice tasty bluegill fry but i've never been able to find them big enough for me as i'm lazy and wont keep small panfish, 10" is my minimum for perch and even that seems like fruitless labor to me lol.

Ive had a lot of good lazy summer days with just some line tied to a stick catching these guys all day on a dock with a cooler of beer, ahh the memories

They sure taste good though and you can get some nice palm sized cuts off the bigger ones!

I don't get the hate some people have for them, they are beautiful fish and once hooked, put up a good fight for the size

so I guess reason 2 applies to me the most ;)

bluegills are great fighters, Stoney Lake in the Kawarthas is where I used to fish for them and most of them were a nice size....has anybody targeted them through the ice?....can they be targeted through the ice?

Yes I have sorta targeted them along with other species at the same time, and have caught them through the ice. Some decent sized ones aswell

I go small game fishing (sunfish, bluegill, rockbass, perch) sometimes old worm and bobber is the way I go, I do get them on small 1Inch twister tails too when after bass and crappie. And when I take my fly gear back to my fav lake sunnys will smack flys along with the bass.

Afew years back we where bass fishing on my fav lake and by noon we had enough bass for a shore lunch, then we spent the afternoon after sunfish loosened off are drags and had a blast.

Usaully its the other way around for me, when I am targeting bluegills I often catch a lot of little largemouth from 3-7 inches. I like catching them but in a way I wish I didnt so that they could be more healthy when I target them later.
