There seems to be a lot to safe and efficienct boating. Is there a course that you can take (in a Marina perhaps?) to learn both the theory and practical stuff. Something similar to the new drivers course where you have 25 hours in class and 10 hours behind the wheel? Appreciate any input.

I live in Toronto

I would check with your local Canadian Power and Sailing squadron to see if they offer the type of course that you are looking for.

Here's a link that gives you information on GTA locations:

Thanks Joel, but this is for the licencing. I was looking for something to get practical training as well, "behind the wheel".

The harbour front boat rental centre down on Queens Quay give practical instruction and certification courses.

I took a course in1999 with the power squadron in Port Credit.

Very useful and worthwhile

Just take the course on line at www.boaterexam.com . Justake your time and go through the info, then take the test and get your operator card. This is the easiest way.

How likely would it be for someone you has never driven a boat before be able to figure out something like a small motor 2 ppl fishing boat

I'd say it's very likely someone could figure it out. Getting it started or turning left and right are one thing, but docking, mooring, approaching someone who has fallen overboard are all tricky (potentially dangerous) operations for new boaters, regardless of what speed or size of motor they're operating.
