I am planning on some dam fishing tommorow. My first choice is caledonia. My question is will it be shoulder to shoulder fishing? I've never been there before and don't know what its like. I like a bit of room for fishing. Usually i wouldn't ask this i would just go, but since its a popular spot, i wanted to know how poulated it is. Thanks,

Catfish

Can be a bit of a gong show...check the flow data and water temps Cat...
Never know unless you give it a go...it's a good stretch of fishable water though...
CC

theres always a bunch of people fishing at the dam. Ive been told there is lots of fishable stretches in the kilometers below the dam but ive never bothered to check it out.

I went there last week. I fished the area around the dam and a kilometer or two bellow. As CC mentioned, the water level is pretty low and in some spots the river is very shallow. I caught two smallies and that was about it ... I was hoping for more action.

So Catfish, We haven't heard a report.....was it shoulder to shoulder like you said?

I was there on the day you posted (29th). Didn't see much through all the legs that were in the water! One kid gill hooked an 8lb fish while fishing with a worm and hook. After 20 minutes of trying to revive the poor fish, he thought it'd be a good idea to release it into the whirlpool. Odd how steelhead swim a lot slower belly up :(

And what Nado said too. I fish the dam pretty regularly and there are usually people there, but if you have waders you can get out to the middle and it's not normally shoulder to shoulder. It is a good spot to fish with quite a variety of species. Walleye, Bass, Pike, Cats and Gar to name but a few.
But as has been said there is miles of fishable water below the dam. You can get fish all the way to Dunnville. I normally buy minnows at Caledonia and spend the day catching lots of Smallies and Cats. My friend and I have had days where we have caught huge numbers of fish all up and down The Grand. If you try one spot and get nothing just drive a mile or 4 in either direction and try again.

I did go there but the action was pretty sad. Everyone was about 10-20m apart. One guy pulled out a 15" walleye, one guy got a 14" steelhead and one guy got a catfish. There was only 1 steelie pulled out in 6 hours and i didn't see a single fish jump the dam. I got 5 small smallies, a sunfish, and a goby which i threw in the trash.

Good job with the goby. They get the quick execution with the ol' rapala skindu whenever I get one....Water is still too low. I'd be suprised to see any steelies get over until November barring a flood. Good luck!

there are some very accessible waters and no crowds down of were you were.Fish were spooky but less pressure meant hooking up.I landed 2 decent fish and lost 2 others.

A couple of times the fishes got near the top of the dam and might've gotten over. I know some are getting over because some guys are catching them in brantford. I want to take my canoe up to the grand river exceptional waters near paris to catch them but it is probably still to early for that, but it might not be long
