Hey,

I will be going on a canoe trip for 2 nights in Algonquin Park, on Friday. Any tips or suggestions? I heard that trolling a spoon is a good idea, but was wondering how you detect a bite without the rod in your hands, one idea I had was loosen my drag until the line would peel off so when I got a bite I would hear my drag running. Thanks.

If you're trolling and the fish bites the lure, the hook should set itself and the trolling speed should produce enough pull to keep the hook in the fish's mouth. Just pick up the rod and start reeling, and incorporate a small hook set in the beginning if you want to make sure the hook is set properly.

Check the regs (I'll look as well) ... but definately if you can:

BRINGS SOME WORMS! So many evergreens up there, it's almost impossible to pick them.

Again, DOUBLE TRIPLE CHECK the regs on Bait, but when your not using lures and trolling, I SUPER HIGHLY RECOMMEND some WORMS!

It's been awhile since I've been in Algonquin, but used to go lots. Worms were like having MAGIC BEANS.

They land the Lakers, The Specs, The Perch, The Walleye....

Besides, You will be spending time just by the shore at the campsite, and whipping out a line with a worm can be very productive.

BE SAFE and Have a great time.

Algonquin is SO BEAUTIFUL! I can hear the Loons now....

Agreed with Blair on the worms if that is legal. Check that out.
Besides spoons, spinners will also produce. You didn't specify what you are fishing Noob.
When trolling you often don't have to worry about setting the hook on Specks or Lakers. When those guys are hungry they will set the hook themselves almost always.

My buddy just got back from a canoe trip in Pukaskwa National Park for brook trout a canoe carrier was an invaluable tool as it converted their canoe into a trailer and carried all of their stuff.
The park is off limits to vehicular traffic so the cart did wonders in carrying their stuff to many places as it turns out a person can walk quite a distance on a hydro line if the load is transfered under a set of wheels.
This same set up is becoming quite popular with outfitters in the Border Waters / Quetico Park ( Atikokan Area) & Wabakimi Park (Thunder Bay Area) around Armstrong Station, Ontario....

Ha Ha! ..... 3 hours flipping plugs!

I think my record was 6. Course, if you've had a little "Medication"... makes the time fly by.

I agree with the WHITE TUBES and JIGS.

*Fairly cheap as well, so you dont freak out with the snags.
Cause the Walleye and the Lakers are always DOWN on THE BOTTOM! ( well... mostly)

Thanks! I kinda agree with the trolling.

I use 11/2 oz or 2oz bucktail jigs with a three prong stinger in black, white, pink, chartreuse, etc...You can tip them with a minnow or gulp minnow and troll them, drop them right to the bottom and reel them to the surface quickly or just jig them.

I trolled a yum crawfish and caught 2 smallies. Thought my rod was gonna fall out of my hands and break! Such a good fight! Never before have I had a fresh water fish take line! One jumped 4 times so happy. I still have to make a report once I download the photos!
