Catching Burbot!

Arn't they also called ling god and don't they feed on bottom?

I could be wrong here many years since I fished the sea back in UK.

I have caught a ling twice using a worm and bobber in the weedest cove i could find fishing for bass. They are by far one of the toughest fish I have ever had the pleasure of realing in, great fight. But man o man are they ugly!
one was about 7pounds and hit like a rocket, and the other was about 4lbs and still fought great. I remember seeing one lying on the bottom at one of my bass holes back home and they have the feeding habits of a mudcat it looked like, they made zigzag patterns across the bottom searching for food. They do seem to spook easily though.

ya they are also called freshwater ling cog and eelpout depending where you live to what they are called
they love cold water and mostly feed at night
here in bc we get them over 120 feet deep only what a pain in the a$$ lol but they are big and ugly
lots of people say they taste like lobster yum!!!!

Do these fish even exist in Ontario? sorry, but its probably my little experience in fishing, ive probably only fished the kawarthas and around muskoka in my entire life..

Yes they can be found in Ontario. I know Simcoe and Nippising have them,amoung others.

They are common in the great lakes as well. Seen them there in lake erie a few times.

They are up here. Called the junk fish. Taste like lobster to me.

The ones i caught are in bay of quinte waters technically, but I caught them at my cottage which is in the area of the telegraph narrows toward hay bay'/kingston. They are super stronf fish all muscle, i tried to get a ddecent pic of one and it outpowere me and fell back in the net. I can only imagine what the jaws are like, prolly similar to a mudcat.

ya i caught them in lake superior and ontario hard fish to hook over 100ft deep thats the best way to get the big ones
and there mouths a hard like a dog fish so you gotta hook them really good if you want to see them lol
my biggest is 16lbs so far but i hear they get a lot bigger

wow that is a big fish, ya i remeber whe i caught my fisrt i thought it wsa a mix between a dogfish and a eel, it was scary i was in the boat by myself thinking i should keep it and take it to mnr. i released it and when i got back looked it up on the internet. The one in the pic posted about has nice coulours, the ones i've caught were straight brown/golden.

I've just caught them on worms, i think they have a great smell.
But who knows if their are catching them at 100 ft plus then they could be eating anything

they are more of a scavenger fish like catfish we use small fish heads and cat food in a can to get them close also chicken liver or even large spawn bags mixed with fish guts most of the time there on the bottom

lol, Ya wwhen I think of it they're arent that many species i have not caught in the freshwater lakes. Someday when i do make my final checklist Im going to the south, has anyone seen any episode of the peacock bass fishing. wow that would be sick and they seem to fight like a dog from hell! cant wait to fish in the states, or even go to some place in mexico or something for bass, ahhh the thought of retirement is making me want to take a dive in my local walmart on the spilled pickle juice,lol.
