Catfish Baits?

Agreed here Redcat. I don't know about the old smelly sock thing at all. I know you are a Cat fisher, as am I. I would not consider a Channel as a rough fish at all, it is a game fish to me. A Channel Cat fights like hell when hooked and although I don't keep them I hear they are good eating when deep fried.
Just to clarify to others, most of my Channels are caught on live minnows or pieces of sardine float fishing. No where near the bottom of the water I am fishing.
Channel Cats are indeed near the top of the food chain and if I was a perch or a small Walleye, there's no way I would fuk with them.

Alfie.

I have not kept many as the laws don't allow me to keep any over 24". With that being said I have caught few under that length...... and I am allergic to fish. I break out in an awful rash when I eat it. I do like to have a couple fish fries a year tho, then suffer the consequences. I have had smoked catfish, fried catfish, bbq'd catfish and baked catfish. I like it cooked any which way.... just remove the mud line and fat. They are fine table fare.

Alfiegee, you are correct. As per the defintion of rough fish, a channel cat does not belong in that catagory. I have always considered them a rough fish because most people do.

I'm heading out to fish for some channel cats on the Grand this weekend, and I was wondering what other people use as bait. Personally, I've had catfish hit anything, from nightcrawlers to freshwater clam meat (there are 100s of them where I fish), but I've been hearing a lot of buzz about grocery store bait, and I wanted to know that was all about.

Things such as shrimp, liver, and cheese. Do you buy these items fresh or frozen? Also, how would you go about rigging it? Thanks

I always have 3 different baits with me when I head out to Rock those Kittys.

1. Night crawlers there cheap and you can get them anywhere

2. Chicken livers also cheap and keep in the freezer well.

3. Cut bait a little more expensive best to get your hands on it early in the spring before the tackle shop is sold out.

I think Catfish like anything it seems Garlic salt on chicken livers , Dough balls , Fish and worm sandwiches .
Hell I'll stop at Timmy's next time I head out and pic up some day old tim bits for them they would probably like them to. LOL

I've herd things like spraying WD-40 on old shrimp( That might be taking it a little to for for this old boy!) but what ever works
