I've been wondering lately about going to braid on my centerpin this fall but not sure if it's worthwhile.

Can anyone steer me towards a good braid to put on a cp reel?

Also wondering about rigging with the braid.
Should I put shot and float right on the braid, and then a micro-swivel to the leader?

Ive heard some discussion about shot lines, but I've never experimented with them, are they all that necessary?

Just wondering if it's really worth switching...

I have used Spider wire stealth on my pin and what I noticed was it dug into itself after fighting a fish which means that you have to cast and feed line to the drift until the problem is solved. A shot line is a must with braid because braid is easily seen by fish. Some say braid absorbs water and in the winter that means your line freezes. I didn't try it in winter. A better choice is Fireline crystal which is a fused line that doesn't absorb water. Again a shot line is required because your shot will noot stay in place and may damage the crystal.

Thanks for the response.

What exactly are the benefits of braid in a float setup then?
It sounds like more work with the shotlines & all, and it's not as if float fishing is a game of feel so much.

I met lots of people on the creeks last year using it (not a majority though), just wondered why.
Also what is the purpose of neon backing on a float reel?
I just have a ton of mono on...

Thanks ahead of time for any comments.

the backing is cheaper, lower profile and lasts longer so you dont have to spend so much everytime you re-spool

No stretch for me, hook sets are a simple flick of the wrist.
I use crystal and it does not soak up any water. A huge plus since I go thru until freeze up. I also use a 4 to 6 ft long shot line, two micro swivels on each end. Float and shot are on there, I use berkley xt as my shot line as I tend to slide my shot and float on it. The rest to the hook is flouro

When I respool, I only strip 200yd of mono back to a uni knot, my 12lb trilene bg backer has never touched the water.
That's why I wonder why people bother with backers...

Isn't it a pain casting with all the swivels?
4-6' shot line + 20" leader means you have 8' of line dangling around for every toss?
Does your shotline ever snap?

Oops
That should read 3 to 4 ft shot line(darn iPod) plus my leader which is 2 ft long. I tend to slide the float up or down to adjust to conditions. The swivels I use are XXS they do not get in the way and great for controlling line twist but fireline does a good job in that. I think my shot line right now is 8 lb and my leader is 6 lb. The leader would snap before anything else.

i experimented w/braid two seasons ago found myself breaking leads of on close in hookset allthough it really helped prang them at long range. went back to mono for main line (berkley ironsilk) love the low stretch but has a little give the dark green colour makes it visible to other anglers but have to run shot lines usually 8 pound floro.... wax on the mainline helps it float i use chapstick
