well, had to try my old spot out for some channel cats. its on the Grand River, and we all know it holds some bigs cats in it. got out, in the evening, because for some reason i only seem to get bites around dinner time till dusk. using dead minnows fished on bottom, i was able to produce a few fish. it was a nice evening, area is somewhat protected from wind, so its usually nice and calm there. takes some time to get them to bite, so it really is a patience game with these fish, just get set up, grab a magazine... and keep ur rod in arms reach. i;ve almost lots mine a few times... lol. i like to stand mine up against a big patch of grass, this way it won;t strain the rod when a big fish pulls it, yet still allows some resistence so a fish can pull and now take my rod with it. managed to get 3 cats in a couple hours of work. not bad, and scrappy buggers. nothing overly huge, biggest was about 8 lbs of so. but i didn;t bother weighing them.

First, and biggest of the day.

get out on the grand river my friends. there are plenty of fish to be had, cats, walleye, silver bass, gar pike, northern pike, carp, crappie, smallmouth and largemouth bass(when the season opens) give it a go people.

Thanks for the advice!

I'm from Toronto so don't know much about the Grand River. Which part would be best to start with?

Dunnville, i would head there and use that as ur starting point. below the dam rite out to the mouth of the river is a great area for channel cats. stop at fishmasters bait and tackle. get ya set up with all ya need, boat launch if ya need to launch a boat is rite there, and u can camp there if u wanna make an over nite trip. PM me if ur gonna go, i can give ya more info!

sweet! i definately wouldn't mind a fishing buddy especially if the place is new to me too. I'll definately PM you if i can make it out there. thanks!

Nice fish man, I have to get up that way and try my luck. I have yet to fish Dunnville but when im going up your way i'll give u a heads up and see if we get get multiple lines in the water. Thanks for all the info and pics, you should write a report man.

Nice fish.

Ive always found sitting a worm on the bottom with 4 split a foot away from the worm, and drawing up the slack until it is taunt, but unmoving works.

The kitties up here as well only seem motivated in the early morning and a dusk.

Hey HyperFox, were abouts are you? I have had luck with cat's at dusk, but now during the middle of the day.
I have not tried in the morning yet, but i will soon!
Thnx
Chris

Petawawa. Roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes northwest of ottawa. It sits on the edge of the ottawa river and the petawawa river runs out from Algonquin park to meet the ottawa.

I find the terrain is detrimental to finding cat. Sandy beaches are a good target spot, particularly if its an inlet beach. Rock, and other hard surface is less ideal. Weather plays a factor as well. After hard rain, seems like there is a 45 minute delay before strikes happen again. I imagine the silt being kicked up probably makes it more difficult for them to seek food.

Watch the barbs.
