how do you guys afford computers? dont you spend all your money on fishing trips. :)
i dont know about others but I don't spend all money on fishing trips.I save for other activities too.

Funny enough, I build my own computer, so it doesn`t cost me that much...I simply upgrade as need, and it`s usually not that pricey.

David Kearney has the right anwser build em and they cost almost nought.

Like lego but for grown ups :)

how long does it take to build your own computer.

I have been building my own computer for the last 10 years...something changes and i change with it, ya need a new this anew that...buy a basic or use the one you have and just upgrade as you go...doing the work yourself, it`s easy, most things are plug and play...just like a giant leggo set...if it doesnt fit it doesnt go.

Approx -- 1 hour to put it together simple set up that is, server builds take a lot longer.

2 hours to load the OS and set everything up sweet IRQ people IRQ's. And another couple of hours installing all your software and your done.

It's really is that dam easy.

what sort of stuff do you need to build a computer ( ie. wires, chips, hardware, casing, etc.)

Case comes with a power supple built in. $70

Mother board --> can get a all in one set up $150 bux not the greatest but will do the job fine. Comes with built in vid sound etc. And right simple to set up I mean it doesn't get easier that an all in one.

That will handle most people but obviously for gamers you require a more distinct set up.

Chip --> $100

Hard Drive --> $80

Then your monitor and mouse key board. Punk an OS and the software anyone with a brain can do that.

Put it this way, add up the cost of parts and double it that's the price custi pays. Easily a 50% mark up in stores. That savings of 50% cna go straigth to fishing gear :)

I have this feeling I'm missing off one thing but its' still the AM.

Tip: Learn what all the beeps mean the mother board is talking to u listen.

1 hour? maybe the first time, basic pc usually 10-15mins, server builds take longer so you can charge more otherwise same thing;) 2 hours to load OS? r u still using win 3.1 & floppies? 15-20mins via cd/dvd, 5-10mins with your favourite imaging warez. Ah I miss the old pc days.

A great place to buy parts online is ncix.com, yes u have to pay shipping but no PST.

I virtualized everything and just have one pc running 3 Xps, 2k3, solaris 10, suse 10 sp1. No need to build hardware anymore just images.

Problem with things like Disk Image is every time u make a change u need to reimage the drive! and then reload it back on when required that takes some time bud how u ever get anything built and on the market with a low profitable over head I do not know.

The only time I image is a disk is for our Q/A machines which obviously Q/A need all the various OS's to test on.

And your saying u use the same beast for 3 Xps, 2k3, solaris 10, suse 10 sp1 for all that why? Dosent solaris have funny hardware requirements http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/

Either your right cheep or have so much spare time to reload everything your crazy.
Deff not efficent thats for dam sure. Crazy dev enviorment!

I don't know how u think u can put it together and install the drivers in 15 min? Your a champion!

"15-20mins via cd/dvd," & the update your not going to give me the most recent update? That alone is almost an hour bud re evaluate your time else your losing money!

Bigfisherman I read my post and it sounds a little aggressive so I thought I should let u know I didn't mean it to sound that way it was more a point by point logical argument. No offence intended if it sounds like I'm being rude!

Nah doesn't sound aggressive at all dude, I don't do MS updates. With certain virtualization warez & tools the image will change anytime u change anything on that specific platform/os in real time. so no need to "reimage" and if you use only a hypervisor no need for an oS, I don't do much MS stuff anymore so I might not be up to date.

Right now I'm working on an AIX to Zlinux virtulization contract, Global Storage Architecture the actual amount of storage is well into the Petas. 960 aix servers are being put on a single IBM Mainframe w/64 cpus makes Skynet look like a Vic 20;) Now thats a Dev env:) that includes Alpha, Beta & Perf envs. and get this mainly running Clustered WAS, MQ, DB2 app servers with some Was servers running 40 JVMs!

Oh and btw I run can run all those VMs on my pc at once although its slow, I usually only run 2 MS Xps & a unix os. x386 Solaris 10 doesn't need much to run same with Suse.

Eventhough the concept of virtualization is been around since the 60s it is the future.

"960 aix servers are being put on a single IBM Mainframe w/64 cpus makes Skynet look like a Vic 20;) Now thats a Dev env:)"

Thats no Dev enviorment thats a prduction set up bud. Dev should be your desk top, DB server and test machine.

Java kicks ass bud my fav forsure!

Hmm computers...

My first computer was ...
486DX2 66MHz
1MB*8 30pin RAM
340MB 4200RPM HDD IDE
14" Analog CRT High Radiation monitor (800x600 resolution)
Windows 3.1 (upgraded to Windows 3.11 Workgroup)

Internet surfing with 14.4kbps Dialup! (oh god what a nightmare)

Later upgrade to have 2X Speed CDROM drive and 16bit SoundBlaster Vibra ($240) Just so I could play Command & Conqurer CD game.

One thing most people didn't have at the time... I had a Okidata 400e Black & White Laser printer (few hundred $$)

I've used this system for bloody too long, had it until end of 1998.

End of 1998 I built my first ever computer, Celeron 300A, 64MB, 6.4GB HDD 16MB Video card. 17" CRT !!! Monitor was huge! back than. After researching from internet on what computer to build for myself for the very first time & not nothing how to build... first thing I did after finish building was? Yes, I overclocked the heck out the CPU from 300MHz to 450MHz. Matching the performance of top of the line CPU at the time... Pentium II 450MHz.

Ok let's not get too geeky here.

But I would like to say few things about saving money by building your own computer. Maybe back in many years it could have been cheaper? But I didn't think so. You do not save any money by building your own PC but only small amought of money you might? save? depending on reseller is cost of installing the OS.
Otherwise buying a prebuilt or building a PC yourself... there is no difference.

Heck, it's cheaper to just buy a whole new pc from Dell than to build one yourself. If you compare the price... buying from Dell you pretty much get they keyboard/mice & OS for free.

Sorry... felt like i started a new subject.

By the way,,, the original IBM M-Type keyboard still is the best!!!

lol nice. They were selling a Tandy 186 for $3,000 :) Nice find MikeyMikey!

(Bill Gates is still as geeky now as he was then.)

My first computer was a Commodore 64. I was a little kid at the time and was the only kid on my street with a computer. I remember all the kids coming over to my house and ringing the doorbell on the weekends to play games on the C64. lol

My first PC was a 286 with a 20 megabyte hard drive and 12 MHz CPU. My parents bought it at the Brick. :) I had a 2400 baud modem and was into BBS's before the internet came into the mainstream. I remember downloading gifs taking an hour depending on the size and resolution. Not many people at that time even knew what a "modem" was. lol

The first computer I built was a Pentium 1. Since then I've built so many computer systems for myself, friends, family etc...

As far as saving $ goes, you used to be able to save a lot more than you can now building your own computer, but it really depends on a lot of factors.

Hahahaha... it's so funny...
you guys are all NERDS!!! :)
i'm not a computer guy. I bought my package from Dell a couple years ago. This 22 inch widescreen LCD monitor I currently have was huge and expensive back then!!!!
