Cover spinning rod for transportation

I know there are bags for rods to buy.
But is there a cheaper way to protect the rods for storage and transportation?

Found that some guys use pipe insulation for casting rods, and for spinning would need a really wide tube insulation, don't know if this exists...
Some are using PVC plastic tubes.

any other ideas?

If you have multiple 2 piece rods, I bought a gun case to transport my rods. $35 at Canadian tire. You have to take your reels off and transport them in a bag but I like it. Takes up less space and never worry about breaking them.

I use plastic pipe but years ago I just got a big cardboard tube from a carpet store---they are quite sturdy.
