Fisher: You're right. My rod will do up to 17lbs. The drag on the stradic can do 20lbs. I was using 20lb braid /w 12lb fluoro when I was casting into the lake. When snapped the line b/c I had chipped my top guide I switched to 15lb Fluoro and got crap results in the lake. That was also about when I started to move into the river and I got the same crap results. I ended up putting on my Symetre reel which was loaded with straight 8lb Fluoro and I started to hook fish again..

On a side note, I did hook a salmon with 15lb fluoro, but I ended up losing the fish b/c I ended up bending the hook with all of that pressure. - I knew my rod to take the extra weight so I pretty much just cranked up my drag and tried to drag the fish in. I figured that the line would give before the rod, but I didn't think the hook would bend...

I agree with Rapalaboy. If you're using a medium rod, 20lb/15lb combo is overkill... Secondly, IMO 15lb fluoro is too stiff and wrecks the presentation.

Rapalaboy: Lemme know how you fair going to 12lb fluoro. I'm thinking it might still be too stiff and make the presentation look weird... I might move to 10lb from 8lb but that's the farthest I'm going to venture... I'm still going to use braid mainline though...

Here's another question for those using braid main line. Are you using any mono as a shock line?

Why? will the line be too heavy and pull down the float and where do you buy your tackle(hooks, lines , bobbers and rods and reels)?

Not really concerned about the "weight" of the line. Fluoro does sink, but not really an issue. If your rod can only handle say 8-12 (medium rod), the heavy rated line will just add disadvantages rather than benefits. In this case, heavier fluoro will be stiffer. Even though it is invisible in the water, stiffer means that your presentation is going to look weird.. Its like trying to feed the salmon with an invisible stick... The roe or whatever should be floating naturally.

With regards to my store of choice, JB Fishing Depot. Stephen over there is great and he knows his stuff. They do have some high end stuff but its worth every penny if you choose to go that direction. Pricing is decent as well. He's even kept the store open late for me so I could restock my lure for my fishing trip the next day. JB Fishing Depot all the way!

Second choice is LeBarons.. but I'll only go there if Stephen doesn't have it. It all boils down to a customer service issue. I've dropped a ton of money at LeBarons before I found JBs and I would not even get a hello from their staff. Early summer when I was bass fishing 3-4 times a week, I was going in there every other day and I would get more acknowledgement from the boat smart folks that were there.... Yeah I'm simple and I like decent customer service.

The last place I would go is Bass Pro. Simply put, horrible customer service from 90% of the staff there. There's one or 2 decent folks but overall they suck. On top of that the prices are ridiculous. They are using the old US-Canadian exchange rate and gouging everyone now that the dollars are almost at parity. (Not a theory, a manager there told me that when he was price matching a rod.. I had asked him why is there such a big price difference - obviously he left the gouging part out.)

Hey Rapala Boy,

What gear are you using? Looks like a spinning rod? I have a 9.6ft St Croix Wild River MH /w a Stradic 4000 and I'm having a tough time floating... I've lost countess bites b/c I had too much slack in the line. I'm debating going to fly fishing b/c of this..

Which line ar you using as you main line and leader because that rod and reel can handle up to 17 pounds?
So if you have a Heavy or medium heavy rod rated for 20 pounds then you can use the heavier setups such as 20 pound braid and 12 pound fluorocarbon right?

you guys are silly.

if you ever see the salmon react to your line I.E dodge or avoid your bait its because they can obviously see it.

its awesome for snagging for those big lines.

im thinking of switching to four pound line and six pound leader to go for a more stealhier presentation.

Exactly why I'm moving down not up. I'm too much of a noob for 4lbs  I'm might consider 6lb though.. What's the rationale of heavier leader?

Well, technically you can use anything you want. There's pros and cons for different setups. You need to weigh the advantages against the disadvantages..

Lemme ask you, why do you want to go heavier?

Some of us adults have to actually work......

its called growing up.

I'm balancing a full university courseload and a part time job this semester and I'm giving it a shot on friday. It's called "planning." Also don't see how someone who both financed all their school textbooks and a high end laptop with their own money is a punk kid. I know you're only kidding, but idk.

Sorry ex0or. As Rapala mentioned, I had some car troubles this morning. The car finally started around 9 and figured I'd just head into work instead. I thought that I could've relayed the message to you guys before you got out. I sent the msg around 8:30.

Seems like you guys had a great time though.

How were the conditions there today? Were the salmon still running or were they just holding?

Went to Wilmot after work and they were holding, with a few swimming up.

You're a punk kid b/c you're like half the age of the average angler on credit! Technically the industry needs more punk kids to get into the hobby / past time / obsession. If not we'll forever see crappy selection and high pricing in Canada.

i use 10 pound mono and 8 leader i land fish just fine. I dont know why some of u woud want 12 pound leader thats just insane its more visable and will spook fish as well.I use my 13" footer so i got the edge on them. now if u guys are using anyhting below 11 feet then get your self a bigger rod.

What he said ^^

I use 10lb mono and 6lb leader. If the fish take it in the mouth, you're able to turn fish and land them no problem with full control of the fish.
I'm assuming you guys are losing fish with your heavy tackle because they are snagged and you can't control them.

i already change my main line i got 20lbs braid lol its to heavy to catch some salmon thats why when i go fishing i change to 10lbs mono and 8lbs flouro carbon i hope salmon won't snap my line lol im just trying my mono if it work better than my 20lbs braid lol

Is anybody interested in going tomorrow?

Can someone suggest a good rod/reel combo that would work for casting spoons at the mouth, as well as float fishing up river? I'm leaning towards the Shimano Saros 4000 reel but still unsure of what size/model of rod to get.

The 4000 is perfect for pier fishing at the mouth.
For up river, I would think it's too big and bulky... I'd stick with a 2500 if possible.

Which bridge are you talking about, the one in Erindale park? It's not close to the bend.

I am pretty new to fishing and the reason why I would like to use heavier line is because I thought most salmon grow to be heavier than 10 pounds.

i've landed a 22 pound salmon on my 10 pound line so it is possible lol
