New to the board, based in Toronto. I’m in the market for a 13’ GLoomis centerpin rod (Model: STR 1563 GLX CP). Wondering if there are any custom rod builders out there that can build a rod that is comparable to this at a lesser price point. I have little to no knowledge about graphite blanks and the terminology used these days but am looking for the following:

12-13 ft. - 2 piece - matt black in color (I'm aware that Loomis does not sell GLX blanks)
Medium-Light Action (4-10lb)
Recoil (nickel-titanium) guides
Layered (multi-colored) rod cork
Sliding rings (not a fixed reel seat)

If you're a rod builder, PM me and let me know what your price point is.

Thanks for the interest.

If you are looking for a custom under 6 bills, I suspect it can be done, but your going to start with a very cheap blank. Likely an anglers roost or something to that effect. I just put a blank in to be built. I sourced a lot of builders before I commited. For the most part your looking at 200 labour plus parts ranging from 150 to sky's the limit. So your likely at a minimum of $450 just to get a custom done that probably won't be what you hoped for. In my opinion, you may as well either spend the extra $150 and have the GLX you want even if it means a month or 2 more of saving. Every time I have settled for something lesser, I have been disappointed. So much so that now I don't screw around. I wait until I can afford to pull the trigger on what I really want, not a lesser substitute. I am going to be in my latest deal for about 900. Lots, yes..... And I am just an average guy, not a high roller by any means, but I WILL be satisfied with it! Good luck whichever way you go!

If you don't mind having a gunmetal coloured blank, the 13' rainshadow XST will be a good choice. Blank isn't over priced either.

With the components you want I don't see it costing as much as a GLX.

The Loomis GL3 is a Matte black in color blank which are no longer available like all loomis blanks,The Rainshadow IST 1562 13' is Matte GREY color very similar looking to an IMX blank and the action is closer to a loomis and quite a bit cheaper then a loomis GL3 if you can find one that is.The XST Rainshadow blanks are Titanium in color but they are a faster action blank then any Loomis or an IST Rainshadow. CTS are sweet blanks too but are costly but if your looking for a blank that has a similar action to a loomis cts may not be your thing,They are super light in hand a fast tip. A custom rod can be done for much less then 6 bills unless its a cts blank or similar with all high end components a Rainsadow would be anywhere from 300-500 depending on components used.

Appreciate the input gentlemen, I think I will be giong the CTS blank route through a builder I found in the Niagara region. Going to cost me about the same as the loomis. My goal is to get something that isnt mainstream while still having the performance of a higher end rod.

Rino

I love my CTS

Got mine done by RCG in the fall. Excellent work, and a great guy to deal with. He would send me updates and photos during the process and would reply quickly too if I had any questions. If you want his info shoot me a PM.

RCG is who I'm using. He seems quite good. Last guy I used was Witzke, but his wait time is long and he is now on the east coast. Unbelievable craftsmanship though. From what I've seen from RCG customs though, I have no doubt I'll be satisfied!
