Definitely sounds like an unusual event caused it. One of the above possibilities seem much more likely than fighting or mishandling. In that time frame, even hooking into 8-10 fish can be tough at times, let alone managing to kill that many through fight or mishandling. That's too bad about the accident, if that is the case. Hopefully a conservation group can help to mitigate that.
