I have a bottom pour 10lb melting pot and a couple moulds for making sinkers. the regular sinkers i make are walking sinkers and usually bell sinkers that doesn't require me to soften the lead.. But with the removable split shots the lead sinkers needs to be soft enough so it can be crimped then bent back without snapping like they usually do. Does anyone els have this problem or might know a solution to my problem?

when crimping them on they are fine but when I go to bend them back they snap in half.

I don't know if wheel balancing weights would work, but there must be a lot discarded at CT and other tire stores. You might have to skim off the impurities.

this is what i use to make my sinkers, never used wheel weights and I always skim impurities as much as possible to get the cleanest lead, the problem is i cant get all of it out and the lead is to hard to use for making split shots, they snap in half when crimping. recently just found out i need pure lead

so far all that lead has been found in my barn and my step dads barn because our grand parents/ parents used to melt lead back in the day. only found one of my grampas old moulds (bell sinker) and i got the Do-it removable split shot and the walking sinker mould.

For ventilation I usually do all my mass melting outside during the summer casting them into those really small cupcake ones. during the winter when im making the sinkers i do it in my barn with my lee 10lb bottom pour melting pot but its very well ventilated (lots of doors and windows open) also have a fan running to keep it circulating.

lead gives off fumes when heated to high. at normal casting/ melting temperature fumes are not given off. i know all the health risks and safety measure needed to take when melting my lead.... even have a respirator for painting so I should be fine.

the weights off tires worked for custom jigs they were making at a local fishing store, i'm not sure about removable split shots though.
