Yes they are extremely important to have in fact I'm surprised you didn't have a pair with you !? You loco ??
Especially with pike & ski's, you don't want to take a chance of one of them snapping on your hand while using the pliers (and it has happened at the islands before), I've seen it first hand lol, gash in hand = trip to the hospital + stiches. Hence their nickname "downtown gators" Its worth the 2 bucs it costs @ lebaron (Woodbine ave.), purchased one when I picked up a rubber net 2 years ago, brought mine out with me numerous times, also taped the ends with electrical tape to prevent harm to the fish.
