Yes they are extremely important to have in fact I'm surprised you didn't have a pair with you !? You loco ?? :)

Especially with pike & ski's, you don't want to take a chance of one of them snapping on your hand while using the pliers (and it has happened at the islands before), I've seen it first hand lol, gash in hand = trip to the hospital + stiches. Hence their nickname "downtown gators" :) Its worth the 2 bucs it costs @ lebaron (Woodbine ave.), purchased one when I picked up a rubber net 2 years ago, brought mine out with me numerous times, also taped the ends with electrical tape to prevent harm to the fish.

Get one of these too...
Lindy Fishing GLoves

They advertise it as .. " Providing safe and efficient fish handling, fish slime and odors easily rinse out of these chemical-resistant gloves. "
Yet when I used it to grab a salmon past year... glove stunk even after a wash.
But other than that... it is good glove for for those tooty fish

Yeah they're excellent gloves to have for handling pike or muskie, or any toothy or big fish. Always keep them in my back pocket with the jaw spreaders & hemostats, ready to use at a moments notice, and they're also great for holding the fish in place while filleting :)
