hey I got a quick question: Do you need to use a floating plastic lure in order to keep the hook horizontal?

This Link is a link to a great website with descriptions and pictures of many common rigs: http://www.fishinfo.com/fishing-articles/article_512.shtml

Thanks,

FishingNoob

you could use a floating minnow or something but its not necessary. The point of the drop shot rig is to work it back to the boat slowly, and keep a tight line to detect hits. Weather or not the plastic float makes little difference unless your just deadsticking slack line.

Thanks for the reply. I though you just cast out and not move rod or reel but let the current move your bait or wiggle the rod tip.

Just corrected my grammar

any plastic will work, you can give it some movement, none or lots of action depends on what the fish want.

Yea that's what you do in essence, but weather your dead sticking, or subtly twitching it or aggressively working back to the boat, you should always maintain some tension on the line. That helps the lure stay propped up and gives you more sensitivity for light bites.

when you tie up your rig you want to try and keep your hook as straight as possible, after fishing for a while you may need to re adjust it.also they have drop shot hooks you can buy that have swivels at the ends and hook spins freely around just tie your main line to one end and your sinker line to the other, the one i saw was by vmc.

That's could also be a form of: BOTTOM BOUNCING! lol

Ya it could be I guess. I never foul hooked a fish though using this rig so I think the chances are low unless you are fishing in areas of high fish concentration and the fish are active or you are always reeling line line.

???? lol

NOOB: Why do u always seem to 'associate" bottom bouncing with SNAGGING?

That is wrong.

Nothing personal ... (as always) but please READ UP on BOTTOM BOUNCING and learn your FACTS! lol

*Just because some SNAGGERS EVERY YEAR run lines on the BOTTOM with TREBLES etc = DOES NOT MEAN that LEGITAMATE users of this FINE and OLD technique are in that group!

Do you say the same thing of all CENTRE PINNERS running long leads?
How about anyone that uses LURES?

It's not the technique, (in general) it's the PERSON who is FISHING. They are either doing things ethically (many alternatives) or NOT!

PERIOD

Your competely right about me speaking/writing with out doing my research. Just goes to show how much of a Noob I am! I thought that way because I asked a question in the shoutbox, "What is bottom bouncing" or something along the lines of that and the response I got was people that bounce bare hooks along the bottom trying to snag fish. However, I did some more research recently(today) and found that it is a great rig for fishing in rivers/streams with a strong current or drifting in lakes for walleyes or lake trout.

I had no idea what a centre pinner running long leads means or is so I had no opinion on it but took your advice and did some research, I now know that some people that are using centre pin reels with long leads snag fish intentionally and non- intentionally as well as others that try hard not to and do not snag fish.

I have absolutely no problem with people using lures and try to use only lures myself as I believe that it reduces the amount of times a fish will sallow the hook. However I understand the point you made.

Sorry if I offended you I meant no such thing or harm. I hope you have a great week and catch some monster fish. I also want everyone to know that I will no longer relate bottom bouncing with snagging.

Cheers,
FishingNoob

NOOB.... no offense (Personally) Taken.

There were lots of *SMILES* and "lol"

I hope I did not come across wrongly as well.

If so... MY APOLOGIES.

If your coming out to the SAUGEEN ... I cant wait to share some BOTTOM BOUNCING TECHNIQUES.

There of course will be hopefully some FLY GUYS showing me a trick or two.

And then we will have some of the Best CENTRE PINNERS in the Province.

Will be an ENDLESS SMORGASBORG of learning and RESPECT!

Cool my Friend

ps: The "Guys" who say things like that on the Shoutbox are IGNORANT (the words definition - not a flame). Watch who "says" things and then consider were they are coming from or their circumstances. Doesnt make them "bad people"... but it is NOT COINCIDENCE that those who just recently take up "One Particular Style of Fishing" are rathing naive (NARROW MINDED) as to other forms. Also does not make them "NOT SKILLED" at what they do ...

However, when their so RUDE, NARROW MINDED and UN-INFORMED thats just plain: IGNORANT (in a "FLAMING" way)

lol

Opinions and Ignorance are in DIFFERENT BALL PARKS

No offense was taken on my part, you where right, I was wrong no harm done!

I would love to come out to the SAUGEEN - OFF meet up, but do not think I have not really added something to the site in terms of knowledge and do not want to take away from the people with expertise's experience, I also do not have the right gear, or the money to buy the right gear and I do not want to catch a fish on the wrong gear and have him/her die because of it. I might go and be the net man as well as to learn but need to check my schedule.

Hey fishingnoob,

Tie a palomar knot to the hook, after you sinch the knot with saliva/tension, feed the tag end back through the eye of the hook, then tie the tag end to whatever weight you so choose with a double overhand knot (so if you snag you only lose the weight).

VMC makes a dropshot hook (as previously mentioned) called the spinshot, which has a barrel swivel at each end of the hook. This makes it easy to tie, but helps more or less to reduce line twist.

And lol on the bottom bouncing...(depending what type of bottom bouncing you are referring to I suppose). This is a method used to get deep quick, be snag free and present live bait in a natural manner. It's basically a heavy wire weight with a arm that has a snap swivel attached to it. Then you attach a Lindy rig style bait to the swivels which keeps it off the bottom at your =desired depth. That is up to you, by adjusting the length on your line attached to the bottom bouncer. Very common practice and def. not illegal, many of the big named pros(especially on walleye circuits) have been using them since, well like the last 20 or 30 years. It's most commonly used with any variation of a spinner (walleye, colorado blade) not bass style spinner or inline spinner. In really snaggy waters, a floating jig is often used to ensure the bait runs over the structure and doesnt snag up.

Bottom bouncers are also used to troll crank baits and stickbaits, to get them far deeper then they are designed to run

Hope this helps!

I knew how to set it the rig up just did not know if it could work with a sinking bait. Ya the stuff you mentioned is pretty much the stuff I found out after doing my research, but now I know that what I read is true.

It doesn't have to be a floating bait, but obviously dont use a jig as a hook or something like that, lol. A small hook and a small presentation, like a 3" grub or swimbait or whatever will remain in position as needed. As mentioned, make sure you keep tension to prevent the bait from just collapsing on the river/lake floor, lol

and D'oh! I wrote all that for no reason? hahahaha

Thanks for the tips! I really appreciate it.
