I have been hearing and reading about good fishing in Dunnville so on Friday April 17, 2009 I went to Dunnville with Basshunter, for some catfish action. We came there at around 6:30 or 7 PM and went straight to Fishmaster bait and tackle, 776 Main street east. Dunnville, Ont. - see photo bellow:

Weather forecast was calling for temperatures of about 19 C, with windy conditions, This proved to be true as wind was soooo strong and made it for cold fishing conditions. There was only one guy fishing from shore when we arrived, in short conversation I found out he had no luck. Our bait of choice was cutbait which we got from Fish master store. Our set up was as following:
1. Rod: Heavy duty 270 cm long (brought from overseas last year), 100 – 200 gr lure weight, line: Robinson 0,405 mm (15.25 Kg test) , circle hook (do not know the size but it was rather large), 2 Oz sinker
2. Telescopic rod 270 cm long, 120 – 170 g lure weight, Line: Spiderline Fusion 0.22 mm Braided line (13.6 Kg test) , circle hook (do not know the size but it was smaller then first one), 2 Oz sinker

As you can see, we were ready in case some monster catfish decides to bite (and praying it would).

That evening and night we caught total of 4 fish, 1 carp of about 4.5 Kg and 3 channel catfish. It was strange to me, as I never heard of it before, that first fish caught was carp – but caught on cutbait??? Never thought that carp would go for cutbait. With this, I finally broke my skunk record and got my first fish of the year.

Here are some photos of this evening:

At about 11:30 PM we decided to call it quits and we went to sleep in the car. We had taken out the seats in our van and we placed an air mattress and two sleeping bags in there and it was really nice sleeping there.

Next day, Saturday, it was again extremely windy and chili so it was hard to fish as it was cold. There were several other fisherman fishing around today, but few of them had luck., probably due to very windy conditions & big waves?
This is how our set up look like:

Due to strong wind and cold weather, we could not stay outside for very long, so we decided to withdraw to out "strategic position" - here:

We stayed till afternoon and caught 6 more fish, 2 small brown bullhead, sucker and 3 channel catfish. Channel catfish we caught were sizes: 2.5 , 3, 4.5 , 6 and 7.5 Kg. (or from 5 – 15 Lb). So we did not have as great success as efka recently but it was fun nevertheless and will be going back there soon.

good job, too bad the weather wasnt cooperating. well but now you learned something, always check forcast before going somewhere. but with dunnvile its good anytime, just have to be smart about picking location.
if the wind is north stay on north side of the river, if its south, just go to byng island. if west go to port maitland or byng island corner. just common sence. anyway congrats on the catch again.

Did not know about these things that you mentioned - I will keep it in mind for next trip, thanks.

you don't have to, but this way the wind will blow from your back, you can sit behind some cover and the casts will be much longer. heard the byng was under water in spring so dont know how accesible it is, but should be fine imo.

Yeah, I know - it makes very good sense. One thing, I still can not believe how carp went after cut bait ??? That is something I never expected

Anyways, I can never complain about fishing when I go to Dunnville , I will be going back again in 1 - 2 weeks.
