Anybody else targetting fall crappies?

I hear it's been slow for the most part this year, but still some fish around to be caught.
I've only been out a couple times, but only did well the last trip out.

Can't wait for ice!

Yes, black crappie.

Better than perch in my opinion.

Crappie are pretty much the only fish I'll keep and eat.

Wow nice pics.

Do they bite better in the fall? My intel is that they like the colder water so should be more active now and close to shore. Is Scugog, rice, or Trent river which would you choose to go to? I've caught small crappies in rice only. If they are biting I'll be after them for sure. :D

GET THE ULTRA LIGHTS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All the Kawartha Lakes will have crappie getting close to shore or in shallower areas.
Out of the 3 you listed, I've only fished for them out of Rice and Scugog. I'd prefer Rice.

Those are some nice slabs for sure. It's nice to see something different these days.

Exactly. Nice change from all the chrome action. Not that it's bad or anything haha.

Awesome, they hit day or night? Looks like I'll be going to rice( I prefer it too). Maybe wait till next week after the rain. If I get skunked with the bows (I always do.....lol) then keep going east to Rice........haha.

Thanks.

My personal fav is still PICKERAL!

Great to see the Variety that Ontario has to offer.
Thanks

Hes got a small jig with a glow plastic in 2 of the pics. I got some glow in the dark maggots from a halloween store, cant wait to try em on the ice!

Yup looks like night fishing ( my favaorite) and using Berkley power minnow too. Looks like a sure thing......lol. shooting fish in a barrel......lol. I may do this instead of bows.....lol

avid crappy angler here top lures for me are 1) 1/32 oz jig w/ green pumpkin BPS twister tail 2) forage minnow w/ half a tube rigged OVER the treble 3) small power minno for open water applications. they come close in the fall but i still like to get offshore for quality fish look for mainlake humps that still have fresh weeds on them i find cabbage to be the best, but rockpiles can hold fish too. currently my top lakes are 1) Gibson Lake south of Parrry Sound 2) Riley Lake northeast of Washago 3) Couchiching 2 minutes from my home fish are hard to find on it but Huge had ones that wouldn't fit up auger hole many fish are over two pounds. When i was in toronto i would hit grenadier pond, eglington flats, and wilcox lake. wilcox has some nice fish.

That's awesome and detailed info. I got a box of various colors of tubes and grubs. What are the chances from shore? Have you ever caught any on a fly? That would be awesome.

no probs....yeah you cantake them on steelhead jigs buggers or fuggly flies ......streamers could work good in spring if actually trying to get them with the laserline. shore opertunities are not my specialty unless we are talking rivers couchiching park can be good in spring ....there could be fish around the marsh at cross creek on scogog river and wilcox has good depth near shore. if you want to smash some big ones through the ice i can definately hook you up with some prime spots.

Is cross creek on scogog all private land? It looked like it to me when I was boating thereabouts. I was thinking the culvert on 7.

Great I'll dust off my flies and rod. Have'nt had it out for a while now.

I not sure if I'll be going ice fishing yet.

Thanks for the info.

cross creek is off of hwy 35 down golf course road i think formerly county road 57 there is a road that follows the river down there with a bridge over the marsh inlet hit them good there in the spring before family has a cottage in the area also they used to let you fish at the marina havent been there for quite sometime.

mee too .....you guys are getting me jonsing for the hardwater......my buddy took nine pound eye while fishing there last winter fish went back in

If anyone is fishing zone 17, walleyes are closing on the 15.

I may just have to hit the tribs on my way to Rice. Who knows maybe the walleyes close to shore with the crappies at Rice, that would be awesome........ ;-)
