Fertilizing roe

ok guys, after a very successful day at petro I have a bag full of salmon eggs and another bag with salmon semen :huh: so I read on a post here before you could add the semen to your brine to fertilize the egss and provide a double wall. If anyone would be kind enough to run through this method for me it would be greatly appreciated, btw petro is on fire today!

Honestly, you don't need to go through all that trouble.. -Are you trying to make singles?

I personally wouldn't touch the roe. I leave it the way Nature intended it to be.. . Wrap them up into "day-trip" portions and voila! :smile:

That said, everyone has their own preference.. Some like to wash out the eggs in the river water they are fishing from, others (like myself) just leave them alone and freeze them after portioning.
Some like to also use Borax or even a Borax brine for "curing"..

What im thinking you should watch out for is over fertilization. I dont think you would want to soak the eggs in pure salmon. If I were trying out what you mentioned I would fill a container half full of water from the creek and mix the semen in there and then mix the eggs in that solution for maybe 15 or 20 seconds.

Do tests on small batches and see how it works, I am curious to see how it turns out even though I don’t harvest eggs. (not that I could have anyways with all the males I caught this year)

i hear if you place them in boiling water for few min, they turns soft and can be used as single egg on a hook.
i have tried the borax recipe's... DON NOT TRY.... it takes away all sent... it also makes them very stiff. they look very nice. and feel nice. but just dont smell or get sticky..

borax is good for skiens..

if your looking for a "poor man's way", try very small amount of sea salt mixed with a red dye. i have used red koolaid mix (no sugar) mixed with water and roe juice's
the eggs took on a very nice natural fresh color...

but if ya can, keep them the way they are, no blood, water or dirt..

nono, i am happy with my current curing method, my special blend keeps them good for a long time, fish seem to love it and they milk out over a longer period. I don't really go for the natural thing though as they milk out after 4-5 casts, cured my way i get 15-20. This is more simply an experiment. I seen a post on here a while back explaining it, want to try it out.

what do you mean by milk out, are the eggs supposed to leave a cloudy residue every time they hit the water?

i mean not turn white and lose all scent

ok... I want to go on record saying NEVER EVER F@@@ING DO THIS. It has maybe been the worst experience of my life. Side note, they look/feel/smell incredible.

I will pm you a nice little thing to put in your cure process... Btw you need borax/salt/sugar +wateva color jello u like if any. Mix with 8 cups water add egss for several hours, voila

I heard, from an old wiseman on the creek, that mixing the semen and the eggs in your mouth gives it a proper fertilizing temperature. Spit out after two minutes and tie. Not sure I wanted to believe the guy :lol:

All joking aside, this is a really interesting method, I want to hear more.

Seriously, I too have heard that if you do actually mix fresh eggs & milk ... you end up with the "Real Mckoy"
Think about it: Most of the eggs that will be floating down stream, under the rocks ... have been fertalized (or I would guess at least 50%)
*if you read up on SALMON HATCHERY METHODS - you get about 60 days before the eggs "Smolt". Of course the fish would eat these as well.

This would be the "natural food" the fishies are seeking.
I personally have never gone the "extra step" and done this, but it "logically" does make sense.

The only "Problem" I can see is this:
Fishermen would be out there not only, getting hens (eggs) ... but "milking" the males as well.

For now, I shall just stick with: Roe (none cured), Beads, Pinkies, Worms, Spinners, Spoons & Flies.
Seems to do the trick!

y not just post it here? And what method did you use with the semen?

I put about 3oz of salmon spunk into 2l of brine,,, it literally turns ur entire brine mixture into, well in my case bright orange chowd... gross, anyhow, from what I observed, the semen expands and kind of encapsulates the eggs. After about 4 hours it turns into strands, at this point I am guessing the job is done. I went out fishing for 9 hours yesterday though and was beat, passed out around 8pm and didn't get to draining rinsing them till 9am this morning... However they turned out different thats for sure, much lighter in color, closer to there natural color and are very very bouncy. I will post picks of the comparison after work tonight


Sidenote: Does anyone know why the eggs you put in white come out like little glassy rubber BB's?

darn I am jealous of your roe. I wish the salmon that came up to spawn were edible or I at least knew someone who didnt mind eating them so I could have some prime eggs of my own.
