Now that it's getting cold out I was wondering what everybody does to keep the ice off their line and float. I just keep breaking it off after every few drifts but there has got to be an easier way.

i go ice fishing, lol, you could try rubbing the line with vaseline, but that might affect the fish, who knows, worth a shot, i dont know why you would want to fish in rivers in the winter, youve got so many lakes to ice fish with a better chance of catching a steelie, then in rivers, but thats just me.

Keep your line off the water when your drifting and hole back on your cast just before your float hits the water to minimize the excess line that would land in the water after a cast

dosent mono not absorb water so it shouldnt ice over anyway ?
it does ice and it makes your guide ice as well. I don't think it's because it's absorbing water but probably because the external part still holds some drops. i'm sure everytime you retrieve on the warm days you will be able to spot some splashes on the guides.

i put vaseline on the tip of my rod and it works great i never need to break off ice and i dont need to rub some unusual substance all over my line i use good ole ande mono

In addition to all good suggestions up here, I would suggest shaking water off your line as soon as you start retrieving. Give it a yang and it will shake off most of water remaining on the line.
