]Hey, so this is my first post on this forum. I've been fishing up in the the Kawartha Lakes all my life but its not until recently that i had taken up an interest in Brown Trout/Salmon/Rainbow/Steelheads etc. Through recommendations of my uncle, he mentioned i should invest in a Fenwick HMX Steelhead rod. I will be fishing the Whitemans (brantford, i think that's what it's called), Caledonia Grand river in november. I also hope to venture out to Bronte (Petro Station) with some friends and try for salmon. The more i read this forum, it seems i need to be carefulI around bronte as it seems to be a bunch of butchers and a general s**t show . Basically I'm a noob, any help would be appreciated. Through research i am guessing a Fenwick HMX 10' Medium Heavy to Heavy action rod (spinning) would be appropriate for these situations? please correct me if I'm wrong. Also my current reel is spooled with 15lbs p-line i know that a 6lbs leader line is needed for fishing with a float and beads, and a 12 size hook correct? Braided line is not required? Also i"ve heard rumors about the toxicity levels of mercury in lake ontario. I'm a second year science student at mcmaster. I understand ecosystems very well, especially bio accumulations of heavy metals. Is infrequent consumption of salmon low risk from lake ontario?

Welcome "B" good to have you here...
I'm a MAC alumnus and still in Hamilton (always on the lookout for a fishing partner).

Many use braid as backing. There will be lots of information to glean from the experts here I assure you...
I picked up a Fenwick HMX last year to beat up on...for the price it's an ok starter (I know you are on a student budget)

If you've eaten cod, crab, pollock, mackerel, herring, whitefish, albacore tuna, you've likely consumed more mercury than you'd find in most Lake Ontario fish. The way I see it, moderation and good food handling will keep you healthy.

Rods for chucking lures for salmon off piers are much heavier than a river rod. If you are going to do both I would recommend that you buy one rod for salmon and a second for the rivers. Having the right rod always makes the fishing more enjoyable.

Seems like it is always a S**t show whenever the salmon show up. Same here in Alaska. I get out there and fill my freezer but cannot wait until the crowds and weekend fisherman are long gone in September so that my "real" fishing can begin. Good luck to you and Fish On!

Yeah, oops--staff is correct, I hadn't immediately considered the application...I had picked up an 11 1/2 foot Fenwick HMX for the float...

Thanks For the help I ended up buying an 9'6" medium action for 89. I found any longer than 10 feet the rod was a little too whippy
