Hello, me and my dad are going to the Niagara River tomorrow to do some winter fishing, we bought some fish eggs for bait, but besides that we have no idea what we are doing. Any tips/helpful advice and strategies would be appreciated. Thanks

slip floats, big split shot, pink has been producing i've been using pink jigs, breathable waders help even though your not wading the water levels can change..... But the most important, especially tomorrow are cleats!!. very icy on the rocks

What type of fish is this meant to catch?

Well that's the fun of fishing that river..its the roulette of fishing. You never know what you got. Could be Steelhead,Browns,Lake trout,Musky..I've seen them all caught using the methods stated above. Good luck!

if you don't wanna float fish, throw large heavy spoons on a decently fast retrieve, find the seams of water and work those areas, work the tail in and tail out of the main basin. Wear warm clothing (preferably breathable waders) and cleats and always, always make sure your visible should anything happen. 12lb line (mono) at least is good in case you line rubs some ice or in case you hook a muskie. long rods 10ft + is ideal. best spoons would be 5 diamonds, dare devils or kiwik fish however those aren't spoons, in general any flashy silver or gold spoon will work. try fishing sun up or down if you can, and again be careful the river isn't a joke and with this bad weather its even more dangerous but its worthwhile. good luck and tight lines

If you are fishing the WHIRLPOOL -

consider the BOWL like one big Trib.
Fish the shore lines only about 20-30 ft out (No more needed).

You will get used to the current changes.
Try minnows or imitations this time of year. (Not that eggs is a bad choice either)

The lakers like blue/red spoons.

the temps dropped over this past week, fish have slowed a bit, but are still catchable. be willing to switch up baits/tactics.

oh yeah the trails are slush and ice, proceed with caution.

i hope you are not going or went to whirlpool this weekend, it is almost suicide. the walk down a lone could get your neck broken from a slip in this weather, and falling into the river = dead. if there is no freezing rain, and rocks are not slippery, you can even fish the bottom, you can catch anything that lives in lake ontario within few feets of the bottom. i would use worms to bring up your chances of catching anything.
