fish find the weirdest places...

on my way home in waterloo, i biked past a small stream on weber street near university....
there's a small tunnel going under the street for overflow rain water....
and looking over the railing, I saw 5-10 pound carp....
I have no idea how they managed to get into this system, as it's basically just for excess rainwater and bare in the summer!
funny thing is, it's basically next door to uptown waterloo!

I know one very bizarre place right in Waterloo that has browns but I haven't fished it (yet).

Waterloo Region is one giant anomaly when it comes to where the fish are - or does that hold true for all regions?

The standard lake and river spots can produce - but no stream should be overlooked.

I don't know when Carp spawn, but I know that a lot of fish will migrate to bizarre waterways to spawn. I caught a steelhead with my bare hands this year, it ran up the tiniest little stream that is attached to one of the tribs! Released it back into the trib, otherwise it would have died when the little side stream dried up.

Orton Ontario near Fergus. Brown trout literally in a ditch no wider than 2'. A local told me this is an annual occurrence. Not far from there is where the speed river starts. Thinking that's how they make their way there.

That is Laurel Creek. It runs from the Conservation Area north of the city, through U of W, past the perimeter institute, under uptown Waterloo and ends up in the Grand near the round-about at Bridge and Lancaster.
It's crazy how urban areas develop around natural streams. Carp are probably up there due to all the rain we've had and the fact that they are in the mood to spawn. The creek is controlled at a dam or two I believe and you are correct there is little to no flow in the summer so they can maintain the water level in Waterloo Park.

are u sure it empties into the grand? silver lake is on the river and it is just packed with carp. You technically cant fish there cuz its a park but i was only bothered by some douche once. Most of the time people just find it hilarious that you are fishing there, and then they are amazed when you catch a nice 10lb carp a minute later.

Yep, Laurel creek flows into Columbia Lake and Silver lake and then flows out near the old mill and under the city and drains out at the grand.
I have seen carp in silver lake, but i've never fished it myself. There is big carp in Victoria park as well. That drains into the grand as well through Rockway golf course.

Is fishing allowed @ waterloo park?
I was there a few weeks ago with the family and noticed tonnes of huge carp in the shallows off the boardwalk.

Waterloo park is silver lake, technically you arent allowed to fish because it is a park. But it isnt an MNR enforeced law I dont think, I fish there every now and then. I just use corn and cast right into groups of fish, its not very sporting but you are pretty much guaranteed fish.

You can fish anywhere you want if there is public access. "No fishing" signs on public areas have been shown to be contrary to the wording of the trespassing laws. It was mentioned before on other Canadian fishing/hunting forums that the law does not allow for exceptions based on the activity. If I remember correctly, it has been fought and won in courts in Ontario.

The MNR doesn't care if its a park or not for any kind of fish (not to say, parks are sometimes used to designate a part of a river), the only real park rule for fishing and keeping your catch is that you can't keep snapping turtles at parks as far as I remember.
