i was fishing on Monday and I caught some fish that i had never caught previously, i don't know what they are so I was hoping some experienced fisherman can identify these fish.
I caught at least 25 of the green with black striped fish(4538,4527) and around 5 of yellow perch like fish(4545)
they were all soft ray fish.

Ya definately chubbs, looks like u were keepin em. Did u manage to get any meat off them?lol

To me, the first picture looks like a creek chub, the second picture of a common shiner and then the yellow perch. Nice catches btw

Yup the first is a common creek chub. But that's a big one. Save it as bait for walleyes or pike.

The next one is a alwife.

Where were you fishing? Was it a creek or river mouth? Creek chubs are usually in creeks and Alwifes are usually in lakes.

Perch are everywhere.....lol. Nice catches.

AWESOME ONTARIO BAITFISH ID CHARTS!

..... your second pic fish has the orange tinged fins common to Common Shiners, a small carp-like shiner.... i think "shiner" throws us off, looks like "chub" or "dace" would be more appropriate but there ya go

your second last pic looks like 2 male Bluntnose with a perch but there are many that look like that we need a closer head shot

i love these charts

i would love to see more pics if you can get any and see how many types you may have there... very cool

Yes definitely Perch and creek chub. There are lots of those where I usually fish the biggest creek chub I have caught was about 13 inches.

"Dugger":

Those "Links" are Fantastic if You're looking to educate yourself about ALL "Invasive Species". Also what IS, or what is NOT Legal to use as a Baifish".

I spent at least an Hour jumping around to various Sites and Downloading TONS of Documents and Pictures.

The "Baitfish Primer" is excellent as a Summary of EVERY Fish that might or might not be used as a Baitfish. Every one of them has "Legal" or "Ilegal" right across the Picture.

"Shiners" ..... Holy Smokes"! ............I can see why anyone could be CHARGED with using the Wrong One as a Baitfish. DOZENS of them and very hard to distinguish between them all.

Thanks for the Info.

Rick

Chubb, perch and emerald shiner I believe. All good bait for bigger fish, but I think perch are illegal to use for bait.

Alfie.

It's not an emerald shiner... Lol emerald shiners are the ones you buy from bait stores in the winter. I had to learn all my bait fish and fish species when i worked with the MNR.

....are not the Common Shiner and Rudd separate species? The Rudd being a European invasive?

darn you chubs, shiners, daces and minnows for looking alike!!! lol

The Ontario fishing guideline and reg book has all the types of baitfish you can use. There is important regs in there like not being able to use a certain baitfish like crayfish were your only allowed to use it in the the body of water that u caught it in
