Float fishing reel suggestions

I’m going to be purchasing a new reel for my float rod so I was hoping if I could get some insight on a) are centerpins worth the money and if so what brands are trustworthy b) is there a learning curve to them that will take me a while to learn and c) I’ve heard baitcasters can be pretty effective when float fishing is this true?

Centerpins are niche product and are overpriced for that reason along.
The price for beginners reel is around 200$ then there is no limits 700-1000$ are not the most expensive ones.
a)Does it worth it ....for some of us yes. To figure it out for yourself you have to try it with entry level one at first in my opinion. You might not even like it and if you do it will be a room to dream for better one.
b)Yes there is the learning curve. Casting this type of reel needs practice. Landing the fish without drag is another challenge. It might take some time to feel comfortable with this setup. It did take me 4-5 fishing trips to learn the basics.
c)I did not have experience with bait-caster float fishing but in my opinion it should work fine and is a less expensive option. After all I did float fish even with spinning reels before i got converted.

If you are not ready for a pin forget about it stick to your spinning gear. Everything takes practice to learn, and a lot of used reels out there that are not to expensive. Simple mechanism, make sure it spins freely and is not warped or scuffed up. Baitcasters are fun for Salmon too. Choice is up to you.

Dude just buy a pin. Cause you seem to be interested in salmon and steelhead fishing. After a little bit of practice casting you'll be able to do the basic casts (loop cast, side cast, wallis cast) and get the hang of it. It only took me a couple of hours! The streamside vortex II is an excellent option. You can buy it for as low as $160. Great reel for the money and really good for beginners. Or if your on a budget the $50 amazon pin isn't so bad :mrgreen:

Then one day you can upgrade to something better like an islander, kingpin, raven

Don't use a levelwind Baitcasting reel.
Too many problems handling line !

Use a conventional leverdrag with magnetic cast control.
Such as Avet's conventional casting reels with "MC" Magnetic Cast.
Open face far easier to manage your line. Photo below

The lever drag gives you instant drag adjustment when needed
Put the clicker in the "On" position,
This will allow you to pull more line without over spin causing birds nest's.

You'll need to build a fly rod with Baitcasting reel seat,

I'd recommend spiral wrapping your guides.
You can spiral wrap in either direction.
If you reel with your Left hand, spiral wrap counter clockwise
so line comes off the Left side of your reel & vice versa if reeling with right hand wrap clockwise

Drifting with spinning is doable on shorter drifts...I have been drifting using spinning for years...and once I got the hang of centerpin...the difference is undeniable. I have a beat up matrix XL for salmon that has new bearings...PM me if you're interested. I don't have a thought about price yet...but I'm looking to skip Salmon river fishing this fall. Will wait until steels are in.

Lol...I will be fly fishing during fall but for bass and pike...my interest in Fall Salmon fishing declined a lot based on what I've witnessed season after season...I've seen a lot of altercation last year and even had both friends who don't know each other that almost went at it just because of overcasting...lol...it has been getting ridiculous every year...I know it's part and parcel but...I'd rather get into some serene fishing...

Thanks for all the help I decided to buy a centerpin last night off a buddy of mine and I’m looking forward to using it, also if your looking for some salmon fishing with less of the shitshow u see every year I found that if u walk a ways away from where the entrance is to where ur fishing and find a pool there’s usually nobody there and can be awesome, I used this at a park on the credit and found a real good drift with nobody near it and landed my first one of the year,was free from all the frustration and complications of fishing around others thought I didn’t have a net and may have had a foot of water in my waters lol

Only paid 75 since I’m usually the driving,believe it’s a good deal and it’s seems like a nice reel, thought I still see myself using my spinning the first trip jsut to try and get the monkey of the shoulders quickly, I don’t want it taking me a whole to catch one this time lol

We used fly reels with 6 lb mono.
No need for drag on steel anyways

Ha I just read this and was going to recommend an Aventa Pro! A good reliable reel that will serve you well. Remember that you can change how the reel behaves by using different oils in the bearings.
