hi guys im new to river fishing and live just a couple minutes from erindale park. i usually see alot of guys during this time of the year with 13' ++ rods and centerpin reels. i went and got myself a rod aswell.. but the guy at bass pro told me 10' was the way to go..... ( alot of anglers told me it was a bad choice) so instead of asking people in stores i was hoping that this forum could guide me to correct gear required to catch some wonderful fish. i went out last season maybe about 6 outings and cought nothing... i hooked up but didnt land them. well im looking for a new reel to match with my new 13'6'' i picked up and was wondering if anybody has any good ideas of an inexpensive (under $300) centerpin.

thank you

hey dev i live near at erindale park also we can hook up this steelhead season and salmon if you want? any way 13'ft float rod is better that 10ft i got 10ft also but 13ft is way better. float reel http://www.basspro.com/Okuma-Aventa-CenterPin-Float-Reel/product/77721/-1096399 if you are beginner its nice float reel . but under 300$ is your budget you can order online i ordered some stuff in here check this out http://www.centerpinangling.com/centerpinreels.html hope this may help you. i live in creditwood lands near at erindale park :)

I have a 13' float rod but most of the time I use my 10' fly rod because I dont fish the big rivers too often. A 13' is great for rivers like credit or saugeen, but for bronte its too big IMO. If you are just getting one I would suggest starting with a 10' or 11' and then once your more into it get the 13' or 13'6.

hah ha...one of those n00b postings was mine. Boy, I've learned a lot and I'm still learning. I started with the older Stanton reels and this past spring I bought a Kingpin Imperial. I bought the reel new so it worked out to just over $400. I think used, you can get it for $350 and I say is worth the extra dough. Instead of getting a cheaper reel to learn from, spend the little bit extra and get yourself a really good reel. You will end up saving money buying the one really good reel than spending money on two reels.

The Islander reels are highly regarded. They run around $200 to $250 used. If you can wait it out, attend one of the Sportsmen/Outdoorsmen shows where you can get a really good deal. My friend bought a Raven Matrix for $150 after taxes. The other friend got a Sheffield for $140. Both are good reels for beginners and experienced anglers.

yeah sure im just on mississauga road :) and looking for a fishing bud. ANDD yeah you guys make good points ill just focus on the fishing right now becuase i never knew how much a used reel could go for.. if i can find a used islander for $250 ill be excited. ill just use my 10' this month then upgrade once i get a hang of it :). thanks guys!
