Hello all,

Does anyone have any experience with using fluorocarbon as their mainline for float fishing or general use where 4-8lb test is recommended? I usually use it for leaders but if the new products are superior to the older stuff why not just use it as mainline?

Cheers,
Andy

Someone please correct me but if I'm not mistaken, fluorocarbon does not have the buoyancy characteristics as that of braid or other mono lines such as Raven, Andy to name a few.

You will need to run a shot line as they will slide off of the Fluoro.

IIRC, you are correct..

I picked up some P-Line flouroclear i beleve it's called. It's a mono coated in a flouro resin shell. Basically it sinks like flouro and is really abrasive resistant, however its ties like mono so you dont need to run a leader. Food for thought

Mono all the way! It floats well which is a must for float fishing a fluro leader is great. I think fluro would be OK for lures.

I've ran 8lbs (Sunline Sniper, Tatsu, and Invisx) and I can say that I will never be going back to mono. The visibility when targetting salmon or trout is HUGE. You can always run a leader to your braid as I've often done but braid can be a little hard on your gear and there's always the possibility of breakage at the connecting junction. If you're going to switch to FC as a mainline, buy the good stuff. Tatsu was my favourite followed very closely by Sniper (Hard to find in most store, bought mine online). I only bought Invisx cause I was waiting on my shipment of new FC and needed something to hold me over. However saying that, it hasn't done too badly. I've used berkley vanish and it sucks.

I've been using Seaguar Abrazx for the last year as a mainline on my pin. I use 6lb and go with at 4 leader.
I havent had any issues with shot falling off or any other irregularities. I've noticed that the flouro doesnt stretch, i think it helps with hookups. Otherwise i dont see any other advantage to it. Supposedly it's nearly invisible in the water too.
I like it, i'll probably re spool with it again this year too.

I use floro for bass and other warm species or when trolling for trout. It works great, low visibility and abrasion resistant, but mono is better for your float reel because it floats.
