Fly Combo

Hey,

Im new to the forum and am interested in getting into fly fishing.
I have been fishing for years but have never done any fly fishing before. Was looking for some advice on reasonably priced fly combos for beginners. I want a good quality set up and am not afraid to spend money but i figure i should go for something reasonably priced to make sure i like it.
I fish for a wide variety of different species so i want something that is versatile and a good all around combo.

Any other advice you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Also don't be afraid to "pimp" me your used combo set you have for sale. If i can get a better quality used set up at a reasonable price i would totally consider that as well.

Hi, I too just purchased my first fly rod. I purchased an Okuma 9 foot 3 piece 5 weight airframe. the reel is made of graphite composite so it is really light and doesnt scratch. I read many reviews on this rod and reel and many people recommend it for a beginner. I purchased mine brand new off of Kijiji for 60 bucks. Ebay and other online stores prices range from 75 to about 90. Spent awhile in the backyard today practicing my casting. Now its time to hit the water.

Sail has some combos by reddington witch aren't to bad bps has some of there own brand as well it all depends on what type of fish you want to target but mostly a 9 ft 6 wt is best as an all purpose rod

Combo kits are fine but if you say your willing to spend some money on descent gear then I would buy a rod and reel seperate. TFO rods aren't overly expensive ($130) and they have a life time warranty that you cannot beat. Also, Ross reels are extremely good reels. You can get a flyrise 3 reel for around $100. Again, life time warranty and its a great reel. I personally own a TFO perfessional series 9' 5 wt rod and a flyrise 3 Ross reel. IMO you can't go wrong with this set. I have caught large bows, dolly varden, grayling and salmon on this set up. This reel can handle some big fish.

Thanks guys, ya i was looking somewhere in the $200 - $300 range as i feel that is a decent investment for a beginner who is already serious about other types of fishing. The reason i was looking at combos or used set ups is because everything is included. For the beginner in my opinion its tough to get your head around the different lines tippets etc. I was thinking around a 9wt would be good.

Thanks for the advice keep it coming. Judgment day is almost here, im thinking this or next weekend depending on work.

I have some good buddies on Hipwader.com--another forum that offers a "sale" section for used equipment. Check them out, you might pick up some decent gear there.

I strongly urge you to borrow a friend's kit to practice with, try out, and get some sense as to whether you going to stick with it before making a purchase...

Was at the local tackle shop 2 days ago and was about half way to the till with a nice st. croix combo 9wt set. Decided to hold off untill i checked back in here first and checked into some other options. Still ended up getting a ton of gear that day(chest waders, new casting rod for my baitcaster, line, crank baits, soft plastics etc.) so i was all that heart broken. Although im pretty sure my wife banned me from entering a tackle shop for a month or so :S.

Keep the suggestions coming and like i said feel free to give links or pimp your fav. gear, no better way to learn then from people who already do it.

9 wght. may be a little big...particularly if you're just learning. I have a rod and reel combo that has had the crap,kicked out of it by years of angry steel...Scott 6 wght (med action...) and Bauer reel (which I would stack up against my Abel any day).
Med action is more forgiving as you perfect your casting...

Bauer make great reels and Scott are great rods I have a Scott 10 ft 6 wt and love it I agree with cc a 9wt is a heavy rod and could be hard to learn on

I have a st croix 4 or 5 wt 8.5' rod and a phleuger fly reel that were bought as a gift for me and dont fit together. With the amount of fly fishing I do my other combo should certainly have me covered. If you are interested in either let me know and I will look into what they are worth. I think the rod would be suitable for smaller creeks and anything from bass to trout, no good for salmon though. Ive landed steelhead floating with this rod on rivers that were too small to get my 13' float rod in.

hmmm... I think the fishing shows present good opportunities for combos. The deciding factor on wt is what you intend to fish for. Trout, bass, ect. would require about 5-6 wt, pike and larger fish would put you into 9 wt. It's important to match your reel to your rod - 5 wt reel, 5 wt rod. The combos I've purchased at shows were good quality (Fenwick rod and reel, with backing and floating sinking lines included (spare spool) in around the $200 range. Bought 2 of these sets - good deal). Often times at shows the rep gives the dealer "show" dollars to work with so they can sweeten the offer with a few extras.
I have 3 setups - a 6 wt for trout/bass, a 9 wt for pike and a salt water 9 wt for reef fishing - all purchased on combo packages.
