LOL, you already found your problem. The reason we use tapered leaders is that the energy can travel through them without losing power, if you go straight to fluro you're essentially going from the equivalent of 40lb mono to 6, and losing every bit of energy you have worked to gain.
A roll cast is made more difficult if the fly sinks (which a WB will do) because much of the cast energy has to bring it to the surface rather than move it forward. Also a roll cast must be made when there is a good/large loop of line behind your and JUST as the fly is about to stop sliding toward you.
As Chris said, if you do not use a tapered leader, the energy in the fly line will not transfer to the leader - the system will just buckle at the line/leader joint, causing the fly to suddenly and inefficiently hop forward. For a roll cast with a WB you will probably need two - one to bring the lure neer the surface and get it out OK, and one to bring it in right along the surface for a good roll cast.

Hey guys so I haven't bought any fly stuff yet. I've been looking at different stuff over the winter and been humming and hawing if I want to spend the money or not. Well anyways I've made a 250$ budget for myself for both rod, reel, and line. I've seen that Fenwick offers an eagle gt fly rod and as I'm a big Fenwick fan I'm curious if it is worth my money. For reels I've been looking at a couple of the lower priced redingtons, ross's, greys, and I'm also considering the echo ion as mentioned by a poster, which seems like a solid reel. Has anybody ever used these? Thanks guys
I've got 2 of these reels, both served me well. Good drag, light, and for 90 bucks i dont' really care about banging them up.
With that being said, the second one i bought did have a problem w/ the drag. It was sticking, and i ended up taking it apart and noticed that one of the discs inside the drag was slightly off. Fixed it myself and it's fine now. I've landed steel and salmon w/ it on my 8wt rod so it can certainly handle the fight.
Definitely worth considering if budget is a restriction.

you can add the sage 1800 series reels in there as well, got mine for around $100, they'll all perform well
