Fly Pattern

i tie a fairly simple crayfish that pretty much looks like a big wooly bugger with two tails, havent used it much but have caught some largies with it

First, Thank you for the reply and I've had success with split Marabu tails as well, and I have also caught Bass and few trout (Mainly Browns) using wooly bugger variants. The other day I managed to catch a couple of Walleye on the deer hair /broad hackle tips claw pattern that I came up with last summer.

I tie in the deer hair in at the bend of the hook (tips facing away from the eye),then tie in the hackle tips. Then I fold the deer hair over to the eye of the hook with the tips extending over the eye of the hook and make them flare a little to act as the tail. This using a number 4 Mustad wet nymph hook.

That sounds pretty awesome! I will have to try something like that, do you have a picture of it you could post on here? hahah

This is my weighted Marabu/deer hair Crayfish/Shrimp pattern that I have thus far have had the most luck on in my area. That is next to my broad hackle claw pattern.

I just started fly fishing and have mostly been using bass poppers. To fish that fly do you need a completely sinking setup?

The marabu craw pattern (The Thames Craw) is weighted and can be fished under floating line. As for the Hackle pattern you will need to add weight to the pattern ( a couple wraps of copper on the hook shank will do it) or use a sink tip or sinking line. You can always add a small split shot to help weigh it down when using floating line. If you use a split shot the water to water cast is most effective. I use this cast when I fish really fast deep runs while nymphing.
