I find enter a fly shop is hit and miss atleast for me. Being 18 I've been fly fishing for upwards of 10 years now, however when I go into fly shops I always get the same looks and the same comments about what I'm buying, what I'm using things for etc... This is the reason why I order most of my tying materials online, I don't have to worry about some egotistic retailer telling me a shouldn't be fishing a 2/0 tiemco hook for an intruder style pattern... There's a reason these hooks are so expensive, they just work in whatever situation you put them in... Anyways my rant of the day, fly shops fix your shit! Ahha

I agree, sadly the arrogance runs far deeper than the stores---its sad reall such a beautiful sport lost in arrogance

When I first began fly fishing I was taught by my neighbor up at my cottage, he is a retired police cheif from Ohio about as nice as the come. The same day he taught me to cast, he taught me to tie some basic flies. I was under the impression everyone in the community was like that, and now I'm just disappointed. I make an effort to help out new fly fisherman because I know that is where I came from.

When i eventually drink the flyfishing kool aid (it'll happen), i'd hope to run into someone like you to teach me those things! Keep doing what you do.. it's appreciated.

There is a definite snobby-ness among fly fishermen, my advice is pay no attention to them, the only reason that they are like that is they don't know what the hell they're doing. Try stopping in at Wilson's in TO, never had a bad experience there.

thats my problem about fly shops, i go in to buy flies and, nope not that you need this, in that colour and these really expensive hooks, and btw you cant fish -_-. ive some really cool fly dudes on rivers and helped me quite a bit

Just buy from me ;)

To be honest this story was inspired by my visit to Wilsons yesterday. I go to GBC so its a block north of my campus, I have had one good experience there and it was like 8 years ago buying my first vest

If I was the guy I used to be I would probably have three assault charges agents me for beating down three different fly guys this year ... Some of them act like it's they're river and It's not my place to be fishing the same water as them!!! Some guys are cool and some need to be taken down a dark ally !!

To bad the guy was a egotistical Prick, Has nothing to do with his choice of fishing and 100% the fact that he is a Prick

I hear ya. it's like that any where you go. Just do what YOU like to do. When I first started fly fishing I would only ask questions to my buddies who fly fished because of the egotistical people at fly shops or wherever. It was really intimidating getting started. That is perhaps the main reason why I didn't fly fish sooner. Now that I have been fly fishing for awhile and confident in my ability I don't let what other people say bother me. I pay it forward to the next guy. That is all I can do and continue fishing the way I like with they flies I like.
