Fooling around with Steelhead Spey Flies

Wow! I need to get to Wilson's! :) What material is the wing and hackle? I have never seen hackle so long. Those are truly prices of art, I would hang those on my wall.

I use what ever is handy that works for the hook size for hackle. Heron and Burnt Spey Hackle(grey on Lady C.) on the larger speys, Ringneck rump feathers (black on Akroyd and Highlander ), large Schlappen feathers stripped on one side(red on Lady Caroline/green on Highlander- very economical), and Rhea(Freestyle spey has rhea, ring neck and schlappen).

Wings are Turkey(Akroyd), Bronze Mallard(LC and Hiiglander) which is pretty traditional on speys and I think a Black Bear Hair wing(Free style).

Thanks everyone.
I have been casually tying for a few years. I find it relaxing and I try not to obsess over them. There are very good fly tyers out there that would put these to shame. With a bit of guidance I think anyone can tie these flies. It’s a great experience to create something on the vice, go to the river with it on the end of your line, and catch a fish!

And a AAA jungle cock cape LOL. Great looking bunch of flies there! Have you ever tried burning schlappen? Just wondering if it may help keep it more sparse.

Very nice job. Love the lady Caroline. Nice job on the wings, tied a few myself and find the wings difficult to get nice and even. I think i clinch down too much on them. Yours look great though...very nice.

try a couple loose wraps just behind the tighter ones.
