Gar Fishing Ideas?

Seeing if anyone out there has any good ideas for enticing gar pike to bite. I was surrounded by them last night and figured i'd try for them with no luck. Tried twitching baits across the top, erradic retreives etc etc...and nothing. Looking for any ideas using artificials. Ended up catching a mooneye though. Haven't had one of them in a long while.

I've seen most caught on the fly.

I have tried also to catch them but have never been able to hook one.

I have caught a bunch in the past with J9-J11 Rapalas before, usually twitching or different retrieves, but I was thinking that someone out there must have a possibly more effective method for catching them, without the use of live bait. It seems that they were eating flies off the top, except I am not a fly fisherman...any other way I could fish w/flies?

try using water filled float and 3-4ft leader with the fly on the end.

Thanks efka...will give this a shot. I was wading out and literally surrounded by them. Will post back with results.
