Hey,

I have some general questions about fishing.

1) Why do people move the fish back and forth in the water before letting it go?
2) Why do some fish people hold them by the gills, other fish by the lower jaw and other fish by the back or belly?
3) If I catch a fish that is a bottom dweller that lives 200 feet below the surface once I bring it up won't change in oxygen levels kill it?
4) Why are there different type of rods for different type of fish?

Thanks.

1. They're trying to get water to run through its gills to allow it to breathe. I've heard moving them backwards is not advisable. Best to gently move them forward. Better yet, try to land it in a manner that does not require resuscitation upon release. Smooth catch and release.

2. Whatever people have learned and are accustomed to. Don't hold fish with teeth by the mouth. Wear gloves until you're comfortable handling fish with spikes or sharp teeth. Better safe than sorry. The more gently you handle and release a fish, the more likely it is to survive.

3. I've never fished that deep. I think some fish will die if you bring them up from very deep depths but I am not sure on this one.

4. I use a 7' MH for all of my fishing, whether it be steelhead, panfish, resident trout, bass or pike. A lot of guys on here have probably spent thousands on their rods, and even had customs made for them. Like cars, you can get all sorts of variations suited to your personal taste. Different styles of fishing call for different rods, for example ice fishing versus downrigging.

I have a total of 7 rods, each one used and rigged for a specific purpose. I use rods between 6 and 7 feet. 6 for a ultralight setup, panfish, 7 for heavy baits, slop/cover fishing with braid. I would not use a 7 foot rod for crappie unless that's all you have. Wouldnt use a 6 foot rod with braid for throwing a frog.

Catching a 3 or 4 lb Smallie on a 6 foot ultralight setup with 4 or 6 lb test is a blast.

i have caught some fish in deep water (lakers) they berp a lot lol air bladder swelling them letting out the presser i guess release them and they swim away pissed off but happy
As for holding fish depending on size weight (large fish)you should support the fishes belly . bass a lot hold it from lower lip um ah i do it don't think its nice to do lol . If ya close its gills it will calm down enough for nice pic before ya let it go. Should never put your hand in its gills unless ya going to keep it to eat don't keep fish for mount get a rep made.
I all ways bring min 4 rods with me depending what kind of fish I am going after I like muskie so have casting/jerk-bait/trolling light rod lol 15 braid for smaller lures i use braid on all my rods

Great questions! All the answers helped me out a lot too!

But is it "bad" in a way if I just buy a normal rod from canadian tire and just that for all kinds of fish? what the impact on that?

I have a 7 foot 6 inch medium heavy rod with 15 lb mono and I find it works ok for pretty much anything I would catch, but for muskie who would probably need a heavy rod, with heavy line (45-60lb) with a steel leader. Hope this helps.

You will be FINE buying and using a "Decent Setup" from Canadian Tire.

*DO NOT BUY: the $39 dollar plastic crap ... on sale for $9.99

They have some decent ones on Sale (Quantum, Shimano - at half price right now) Reg: $89 for $45

*ONE YEAR WARRANTY

I suggest getting a Reel with an EXTRA SPOOL so you can have (2) different line weights available.

- Easy to Transport, Makes one setup into (2)

The Rod should be either: 6'6" or 7" and MEDIUM ACTION

(Bring a cotton swab with you, Run it through the eyes and make sure there are no "Knicks". Sometimes the display rods get real beat up)

Stay away from the HEAVY LINE and HEAVY RODS!

"Muskie" are known as the "FISH of a thousand Casts" ... It's not like your going to be catching those everyday here in the Southern Ontario Region.

Most of your fishing will probably be for: Bass, Trout, Perch, Catfish, Pike, Walleye .... Occassional Carp and in the Fall some Salmon.

(One spool 4lb-6lb, the other 10lb -14lb)

If you start off using OVERLY HEAVY EQUIPEMENT (For those seldom lunkers) you will HURT YOUR learning curve and FEEL of FISHING!

A nice MEDIUM SET UP will do you well for almost any situation.

*Later you certainly can diversify (SPEND MORE MONEY) and start to get specific

GOOD LUCK!

Unreal! Thanks so much for the help!

Buy a 7:1 left hand baitcast and throw it on a specialized loomis heavy action 7'6" flipping stick.

Stuff that reel with 60lb powerpro and you're off to the races.

:)

No, the shimano "Sonora" is often on sale for a good price at crappy tire. Only 1 spool tho.

I picked up a pfleuger "president" with 2 spools last year. Great reel.

As Blair said, don't. It something "cheap", because that's what it will be - cheap price and cheap quality.

I love braided line no memory dont need to change it every year it holds up better find it casts better to. and i can feel the fish better also tap tap And i use only baitcaster reals .well have a spinning on ultra lite and on jigging rod . Its just what kind of real ya like better, and like the rest of the members say dont buy cheep rod/real.If ya have to save for week or two and buy good all around rod for starter set up bass pro has some sweet set ups there 150$ is good.
