Rather see a fish get bonked gutted and brought home than get fought for twenty minutes, man handled for a photo op and put back to find it dead on the bank the next day. And if worms are harmless call the ministry and ask why you cant dump them within 30 meters of any water body
I agree with the fighting fish for too long stuff...but...my point is killing fish for roe is dumb. Thats it.. why don't you tell me how worms do more harm than plastic and rubbber in the water?... you can use them in the water but have to dump them away from water.....please explain your understanding. .

I'm not against harvesting roe as long as the fish is disposed properly and not leave rotting on the bank.

by that logic, wouldn't it just make more sense to buy roe from one of the retailers? I thought there where laws against wasting game. .taking away from wild stock simply cant be a good thing.Another thing is by taking eggs and chucking carcass, all your doing is taking away...if you leave carcass, nature takes care of it....it smells bad but at least it isnt completely going to waste. ..no?

Natural death I understand , but when you chuck your fish on the bank on somebody's back yard that's when the shit hits the fan and you get another Port Hope happening. Take your fish, that's what the Law states.

@DILLIGAF, yeah there is a lot of fish above William St. Caught a guy up there about a month ago, told him I was calling the CO's. He said what for to which I replied poaching, he screams I'm steelheading not poaching....lol Called CO and said he was actually on his way from Port Hope and that lots of guys don't realize HWY2 swings down onto William and doesn't continue on Elgin. Haven't seen guys truck there since so hopefully he got the message.

No harm harvesting roe if it's allowed. If you take it home, whatever you do to it is your choice. but gutting it and leaving the carcass to rot is what happened at Port Hope and it's what it is now. Now I don't really encourage guys to harvest. I've seen guys gut fish, but don't know what to do with it. actually keeping it in a plastic bag and kept fishing under the sun...I bet you those roe will be rot by the time they got home and no longer usable.

I know I'm coming off as a troll on this site but I can assure you I'm an avid outdoorsman with alot to give but still alot to learn. I won't go much further on the roe debate after this because I myself don't like to be told what to do but.....with declining steelhead numbers and the ministry not having much interest in helping the steelhead population it is up to us to help keep the fishery alive. Letting a hen go to spawn is a very logical thing to do to help. There are many other options to use to fish with. To each their own but it's worth thinking about.
Peace

This is a healthy debate. Trust me it has been thought out a lot. 1 hen can last 2-3 seasons or can be shared by 5 people. I use roe bought from a supplier only because I don't have time to go into the curing process and all that. If I have the time, I would probably harvest for my own use. They are not cheap.

Maybe you fish too much! If you cut down on the fishing, you wont need as much Roe, which then means more savings ;)

lol...I do fish too much but barely use roe anymore...I got just as much success with beads and flies. I will give steelhead some rest a week before opener and try to get as much crappie as i can this long weekend.

I'm not a big user of roe and have bought it and harvested it. I or I should say my kids keep one hen Salmon and one or two steelhead per season. I honestly catch more fish on flies, beads, plastic worms or real worms then I do on roe. Sure some days there is a good roe bite but I have more confidence with other options. I do not have anything against taking a fish, just as long as it's not me. I have but both times the fish was just not going to survive, no matter how much I tried to revive it just wasn't working. Saying that I cringe when I see the numbers of fish being taken and this year it seems like more are going home but I have seen fewer along the banks. I say if you are licensed and playing by the rules and don't leave garbage behind, enjoy the sport however your ethics drive you.
