hey everyone, i'm going to my cottage on the moon river to get some walleye fishing done before the season closes, will be fishing onsaturday and sunday and then will just stay up there for the good weather, so i'm wondering (as i'm far from an expert on equipment) what type of rods, reels, lures to use, and what time of day works best too

any information will help
thanks in advance, Will

ooo~ GOOD LUCK!
have internet access there ? If you're a catching, please post here ! Hopefully we can meet up if you are and if the weather isn't too bad!

No help I can provide, but at this time of the year, minnows will probably be you best bet. and SLOW EVERYTHING DOWN

i'd probably do a medium light setup with 8lb mono. maybe even 6.
good idea with the minnows. bounce off bottom or use a slip float and adjust accordingly.
dusk or dawn is good...but ultimately really depends on the depth you'd be fishing.

i doubt a float is useful there. The place is like 20ft+ deep right at the side of the dock.
Casting out = god knows how much

my grandfather grew up there and he would go diving to the bottom of the river near the falls with a frog spear and would just catch a muskie for dinner with that, it takes a lot of stealth to sneak up on a muskie under water! but i'm gonna be fishing at the base of the hydro stream, it about ten to fifteen feet deep and a HUGE current, almost whitewater

and what length of rod would you suggest, if it makes a difference

the end of the hydro stream as in the launch right? If youre at that spot, 6' or so does it for the summer, but since I don't know where you need to cast at this time of year, i say 7'

If you're going for so many days, why don't you go to the bala docks too anyways?

i'm going to go all over the place, but i won't be fishing for all those days as the season closes, and i will definately have to fish at the public docks cause i want to try out my new fly rod  do you know where in that river i could catch panfish from shore at this time of year?

OH TRUE, it closes on saturday. Damn, i was hoping to find a day to go, but I guess not this year.
No idea where to go for panfish though. Try panfish baits at the docks. My grandma caught the one and only rock bass of the trip at the docks in may last year.

moon river eh ? heard they have some crazy muskies an pike in there.

with a slip float, you can adjust to any depth.... and it also makes for easier casting with greater distance.

really? I've always found slip floats annoying after trying to use it for less than 4ft.

In the past years, I've been a fan of throwing fixed floats, just because the bait doesn't have to drop again after a twitch.

fixed floats crimp the line which i don't like. It's like adding a weak point.
for under 4ft you really don't need a slip, but i almost exclusively use slip method when panfishing. i find that the action is increased with every twitch and i think it rewards me with more fish...well... that could just be me thinking hahaha

for walleye, if I were to use live bait like minnows. I would just rig up slip float... adjust depth to present bait near the bottom...cast out... wait for strike.
at least this is how i used to do it years and years ago at dams and other water outflow locations.

you can allways try after spawning, most of the locals that i've talked to say that the walleye are easy as hell to catch and will fall for allmost anything! :?: i'm probably gonna be up there every weekend in may

I guess everyone is confident with their different approach. We will see what works better this coming crappie meet!

The one time I ran into the walleye many summers ago there, they were SNEAKY! they held the minnow in their mouths for a while, then ran off with it really really fast. It was probably my lack of experience then though.

my guess to why they are easy to catch after spawn is cause they don't eat while they spawn and they are hungry

hey fisherpeople
could anyone please explain where is gala
i never heard of it
thanks in advance

it's bala not gala, but incase you just made a typo and you haven't heard of bala either, it's a town in muskoka, thats all i'm going to tell, if the fishing is amazing there then i will be trying to keep it secret
